A shaft is a hollow cylinder or square carved or bored through a materiel. A rod is a cylinder of solid materiel. Think of the shaft and pistons of a internal combustion engine. The pistons are the rods and the shafts are, surprise, the shafts. Mine adits open onto shafts which can be vertical or horizontal but all are empty space where miners work creating more shaft..

A shaft is used on rotating equipment. An example is the drive shaft on your car. Technically a shaft does not have to be straight an engine crank shaft is an example of this. A rod is any straight cylindrical object.

I do believe a shaft is not a rod. A shaft is a cylindrically shaped container of a tunnel, and a rod is a solid object, with a cylindrical shape. There is no hole in a rod. There is a hole in a shaft.

Let us consider only the contextual meanings and then compare.Shafts are made up of rods.Shafts may have a few machining works like step turning, threading etc, on them. Shafts can be either solid, hollow, eccentric etc. A rod has generally uniform circular cross section without any machining works on them.
