Well, it seems everyone has just about covered this topic, but I would like to point out that even new cars (or newish) can breakdown!
Whilst the idea is good, in practice, it would be unworkable.
And may I ask, where in the highway code does it say we have slow, middle and fast lanes on the motorway!
.

I think it is a bad idea.

As an ex 2CV driver, where would we go when we break down?

Where do the ambulance & fire engines go when the traffic is busy & they are responding to an emergency?

It's being trialled on the M6 at the moment, but what if you forget & start driving on the hard shoulder on a nother motorway? - You will be fined.

We can't all afford new cars I'm afraid. Are you saying that us with older cars need to drive the long way round & avoid motorways? Bad news as our cars are old they may not make the journey.

Therefore, not a good idea in general :-)

Yeah...it would be good but what about emergency vehicles being able to get through to accidents...we need a hard shoulder!
On the subject of old bangers - I think it should be the people rather than the car who aren't allowed on the motorway - you see some really crap drivers who obviously aren't up to motorway driving!!

maximum maximum in all possibility you will basically plead "no contest" this suggests which you're admitting which you in user-friendly terms did what you in all possibility did, notwithstanding there was once a nicely purpose for it. you may clarify to the bypass judgement on that on your severe-high quality judgement, you have been utilising the shoulder for an emergency. you additionally should element out that your crying infant was once a giant distraction and had you persevered to tension without feeding her, you've got have been given into an twist of fate so as which you have been particularly doing the what you felt was once the main look after element. (this is significant to state those concerns as your opinion or judgement and now no longer as actuality; you do no longer opt to sound like each individual attempting to get right into a controversy notwithstanding as each individual who's hectic approximately her teen and approximately protection.) in case you ought to make doubtless confident which you in user-friendly terms win your case notwithstanding, touch lawyer Gloria Allred or the ACLU. in the event that they take your case, (which i've got self assurance they are going to,) they are going to in all possibility no longer fee you. till now you even try this notwithstanding, touch your community t.v. station or newspaper. as quickly as the media gets wind of this, all and sundry will opt to interview and likely the fees will basically be dropped because of the fact the police branch ought to no longer love the full undesirable exposure. Breastfeeding is a enormous concern appropriate now and breastfeeding mothers have many rights!

That's a fairly stupid idea. The hard shoulder is not only used for disabled vehicles (which includes Jaguars and BMWs, by the way), but also for emergency vehicles trying to get through traffic, as well as the police for traffic violations.

It's not just for breakdowns that we don't drive on the shoulder. If there is a fender-bender they move the cars to the shoulder, cops pull people over onto the shoulder, and busses have shoulder privilidges to encourage people to use public transportation. If you want to avoid heavy rush-hour traffic vote for people who want to improve public transportation, and then use it.

What sort of fool are you? If we follow your lead what happens when there is an accident or a breakdown? We have to leave the hard shoulder clear for just such emergencies!!

And why not drive in cycle lanes too? Just don't let the cyclists on them, or better - just run them down !
