I don't think it's right to call any one group of people handicapped because if you think about it each and every one of us has some form of handicap

People with disabilities - after all we are people first. Mentally handicapped is a PC no-no now and are referred to as people with learning difficulties. Having said that my mum and other people of her age and above still use the old terminology which to those of us with impairments can be cringe-making.

physically or intellectually disabled or both are the terms used in Ireland but essentially they are people. It is considered ignorant to use terms like handicapped or the other insults thrown at them. If you work with people who have a disability in Ireland they are referred to as the "service user".

The benefit that these people receive is called incapacity benefit, so I guess the term incapacitated is "politically correct". I'm not sure tho' as am always unwittingly putting my foot in it as I can't keep up wth this ever changing so-called "political correctness".
I too agree though that it it is not necessary to label, but under certain circumstances like discussing better facilities for the........we need some sort of reference to know what we're talking about.

Firstly treat them equally. Only if you have to explain their condition to someone like a doctor or paramedic, you should use the term Impaired. If someone cant walk properly, you should say that they are physically impaired in the legs.

Why not try their given name, it is not necessary to call them anything!! This comes from someone that is so called "handicapped". I don't appreciated being labelled, I like my name so use it!!
