The NHS will give you a voucher towards your spectacles every 2 years if you are on Job Seekers Allowance, Income Support, Tax Credit (including some pension credit), Under 16, Under 19 and in full time Education, or have a HC2 low income certificate.
You do NOT get a voucher towards your glasses from the NHS if you are over 60 - you would only get one if you are on pension credit as well.
The voucher value is normally dependant on your prescription and ranges from a voucher A (£33.70) upwards to a Voucher D (£100.00+ for complex prescriptions); though most people usually fall in the voucher A catagory.
Although this voucher value is a set amount, most opticians will have a range of specs that the voucher will completely cover and hence be free of charge (This normally means you have the basic lenses and frames).
More expensive vouchers can be issued if you require bifocals or varifocals.
If you are on none of the above benefits but have a very complex prescription, the optician can issue a complex voucher; however this is usually only about £12.70 on the NHS at the moment.
Otherwise a free lunch is only found in mousetraps....

If you are on benefits such as JSA or Income support any optician will have a value range or give you up to £30 off a pair if they are needed

If you are on any benefits, then you will get them for free anyway.
If you are on a low income, then get an HC1 form, if you are eligible, then this would help with the cost of specs.

Steal them off some unsuspecting old lady - she won't mind as they'll probably have been free anyway.
