Only component cables, DVI, or HDMI carry hi def signals.

Eventually, component may not because it does not comply with HDCP. But for now, for most systems, it still works.

You will depending on what source you are using to put into the TV. You must use a Hi-Def tuner to get a Hi-Def signal though. Most Hi-Def TV's use the component or DVI cables.

You can not buy a Hi-Def TV and put it on a regular cable box and get Hi-Def quaility shows.
