The caste system is a misconception in Hinduism. A person’s caste is meant to differentiate people by profession e.g. a Kshatriya is a warrior. In every religion, people twist around the beliefs for their own benefit. For eg. Osama Bin Laden. I’m an Indian living in the Caribbean. In my country there are lots of Hindus and we have no caste system. In India this might be different though. Hindus believe that God is the Param Atman or super soul and we are all Jeeva Atman or individual souls, made up of the same qualities as God. We are all equal in God’s eyes as the Jeeva Atman or soul within someone of one caste is the same as the soul within someone of another caste. The Lord loves all his children equally. For example, in the holy Ramayan, where the Lord manifested as Shri Ram, one of his devotees was a low caste. This devotee was an old woman named Sevari. She was told that one day the Lord will pass by and meet her. From the day she heard this and every day afterwards, she picked the best fruits for her Lord to eat in case he stopped by. However, she wanted to ensure that he had the best, so she bit off a little piece from each one to determine its sweetness, and then put it back for him. For people who look down on others based on caste system, it is forbidden to touch a low caste person, moreover to eat from the same food. Lo and behold, Shri Ram did come to visit Sevari and he ate the same fruit that his low caste devotee tasted from. In God’s eyes none are lower or higher than others. If the Lord Shri Ram wholeheartedly accepted and blessed a low caste woman, who are we as ordinary mortals to look down on our own brothers and sisters?

In the Rg Veda, the caste system is based on merit, not birth. The system in India now is political, not spiritual as it was written.
