Preschool is usually for 3-5 year olds, depending on the school. I work at a place where there is daycare and preschool and the kids that have gone from daycare to preschool adjust really well. I think being around other children is takes the most adjustment and since they have that in daycare already, it's not bad. The structure of preschool is something to look into. As long as they don't have the kids do things for long periods of time without break, they will adjust fine.

The most common age for preschool is 3-5 depending on when their 5th birthday is, it is great for them to socialize with other kids their age and they love to learn new stuff all the time. I know alot of daycares also have the prek lesson plans there so there is no need for them to change but if they do change places make it a fun experience and take the child in before the first day to let them meet their teachers and where they will be going.

My nephew is 3 and started preschool. Well its actually a funny story, my sis recently moved to Saudi Arabia with her hubby and 2 kids. My nephew only speaks English but understands Arabic so they denied him for 2 reasons he has to be 4 to start preschool and he cant speak Arabic. My sis through a fit and they now started a new class for children like him. :)

It just depends on the pre-school and how little they let kids in they might let kids in younger than four but not all day or Mon-Fri just like two or three days out of the week.

Pre-schools in my area start at age 4. I put my son in at that age because there were no children in our neighborhood for him to interact with. He loved it. My sister did the same with her two children. They both thrived.
