As long as your both legal, it only makes a difference if one of you are uncomfortable about it, or if one of you allows peer pressure to make you question yourself.
My ex was about six years older than me. My current boyfriend of two years is 21 years older than me to the day. To be quite frank with you, the age difference was more of a factor with my ex than with my current boyfriend because my ex was treating me as more of an intellectual trophy wife than an equal where as my boyfriend and I have much more in common and have a more mature, equal-footing relationship.
I tend to look older than I am because I don't wear makeup and I don't dress my age. Frankly, I've found that men are lousy at guessing ages in general. I've had people estimate my age anywhere between 22 and 45. I'm 24. My boyfriend is 45, but people tend to assume he's in his 50s or 60s, mostly because of the way he carries himself since he's been in several accidents. At first, the age difference really bothered him, especially when we were out in public together, because his oldest kid is just a year younger than me. He thought it looked like I was going out with my dad (who is incidentally a year younger than him, but my mom is older than him by five years). But, once he realized that I wasn't going away, that the age difference didn't bother me and I wasn't embarrassed to be seen with him and that I know almost as much about his generation's music and culture, his reservation dissolved themselves. It's actually the best, healthiest relationship I've ever been in.
If two people look the same age, then you're right -- it does relieve a lot of societal pressures. So then the only hurdle you have is your own personal feelings about the matter and whether or not you let your family or friends influence those feelings. But, I think you'll find that if the two of you belong together, the age gap is only going to shrink with time -- it's not going to get bigger.

In my opinion age doesn't matter period. More important is whether you two are compatible, whether you are in similar life stages, and whether your relationship is based on love and not just lust. That your age gap isn't apparent is a nice plus. It seems that when the gap is 10 years or less, which in my opinion is ideal, a lot of people don't bat an eye. Within 10 years or less you're actually within the same generation and probably have a lot in common.

How much older?
Are you 18 and he is 40?
Any 40 year old Male that wants for his girlfriend an 18 year old is a man with problems.
This should be a Huge red flag.
In fact anyone older than 25 that pretends to be 18 is big trouble. Beware he is emotionally and sexually immature this is something you don`t want.

It doesn't matter even if people CAN tell there is a difference. Judgment is the Judger's problem!!!
I think that you must be to young to be with an older guy if you are so hung up on the age thing. That is probably why he doesn't want to be with you. Men like women who have confidence in themselves honey.

Age is just a number. It shouldn't matter as long as both person's involved are happy.
My mother was with a guy who was 13 years older than herself and they had a wonderful relationship.

No. I had a friend who was 19 and dated a 35 year old woman.
Of course if it was a 35 year old man, 19 year old woman, no one would care.
But it was a BIG DEAL because she was older.
Hope people where you are at are more open-minded.
They stopped dating after 3 months. Too much problems.

I am almost 10 years older than my husband. Most people don't notice and I'm sure even more don't care. It works for us so who cares if it bothers anyone else!

No I do not think it matters. But if it bothers you enough to ask the question - then maybe you should analyze if it really matters to you.
