Chickens lay eggs whether they have mated or not.Think of all the layers in cages at farm houses that never get the chance to mate and yet continue to lay eggs daily.
On the other hand an unfertilised egg will never hatch no matter the number of weeks that it spends in an incubator.

The eggs come automatically. It is the male who fertilizes the eggs skillfully, not the worst job in the world, checking in on the hens from time to time.

I told my dad, who is 70 and thought there had to be a rooster to have eggs with a hen.
A woman does not have to be married or having sex to have a period right? The only difference is we have one every month and the chickens have one every day to every other day.

The hens make eggs regardless. If they are mated, then some eggs would be fertilized.

Hens don't need a rooster to lay the eggs, just to fertilize them. So if you are after little Chicks, you will need a rooster.
