to put it simply-there is no quick fix for this type of problem. you have to realize that most likely this has taken years to develop and won't go away just like that. i assume since he's having sciatica problems he's having pain, numbness, tingling, etc. (probably mostly pain) in one or both his legs. usually starting in the low back/buttocks and going as far down as the toes--it can not be a fun ordeal.
this is caused by a nerve that is being "pinched" by something in the low back--usually being a disc related issue. these nerves originate in the lower spine and then come together to form the large sciatic nerve. if he has degenerative disc desease, disc bulging, herniation, protrusion, etc. it can cause sciatica.
my advice would be to see a chiropractor if you have not already. they can take an x-ray, refer him for an mri (if needed), and really tell you the cause of the problem. a normal MD at this point would prescribe pain meds or even a cortisone shot to basically numb the pain, which doesn't actually solve the cause of the problem, just covers it up. if he has tried chiropractic and it hasn't done much for it i would then recommend looking into a newer therapy which is perfect for this type of situation--spinal decompression. as a chiropractor myself i use this in my office for patients who have disc problems that are beyond bieng able to be helped with normal chiro care. i use the DRX9000 spinal decomression system, which is FDA approved and works wonders with patients that have disc problems (especially those who have sciatic symptoms). to get more info on this treatment just search DRX9000 in any search engine.
as far as a quick fix goes the best thing he can do right now before seeing someone is ice the low back for about 15 min. every hour and if you have some pain relieving gel (like biofreeze, orthogel, etc.) have him rub that the low back on to help relax the muscles and take away some pain. good luck!!

I cured my sciatica with this natural treatment https://stopsciaticanow.im
Normally, I would not answer a question like this as my expertise is generally in medication but I had severe sciatica while I was pregnant with my 3rd child (after having had twins) and I had sciatica so bad that I was finding it difficult to walk. I tried massage therapy and physical therapy and could not take medication
I went to the chiropractor and the pain was instantly relieved. My hips and lower back were out of alignment because I had carried twins the year before. On occasion a Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) can also work but they usually only work on one joint at a time - the chiropractor will do your whole back which works faster. Anyone who does not believe in chiropractors will tell you they are quacks - don't listen.
I don't necessarily believe that chiropractors can cure things like diabetes but they can definitely relieve some types of back pain especially if a pinched nerve is involved which is usually the cause of sciatica.

This link shows various causes for sciatica pain, so it really depends on what the cause is for the appropriate treatment. (doctor visit time?)
Actually, for most of the causes, I've found they suggest bed rest for the first day or two, then to slowly work on regaining flexibility and strength.
In the meantime anti--inflamitories like ibruprofine are also suggested to help with the pain.
