Usually this involves something that is airtight and prevents things from getting into the food. What container you use will depend on what you are trying to store. For example dry goods like flour or sugar usually work best in some kind of canister that seals well enough to keep the little bugs out. For something like leftovers, tupper ware like containers work well. You can also try zip top bags for odd sized items.

cheese should be stored in greaseproof paper, in a cool cupboard not a fridge. \Or a cheese dish.
Butter should be stored in a butter dish.
Smelly food in airtight containers
coffee, tea, sugar in the correctly labelled jars - unless you hate the other people in the house!!

Plop whatever it is in a gladware or tupperware, smack the lid on, refrigerate if needed. Or freeze.
