This question is very very interesting.
The tree of knowledge gave them the capability of knowing right and wrong. Now, there is an argument in philosophy as part of the debate about the existence of god.
There is an argument against the existence of god that states that if there was really a god that was omnipotent and "good" then surely the world would have absolutely no evil in it. God would just remove all evil from the world and everyone would be happy.
The argument against this is that good and evil exist only because of each other. If there was no evil and everyone HAD to be good, then there would be nothing to compare this "good" to. And so "good" itself would cease to exist.
The second argument against this is that if god has made humans only capable of being good, there would be no choice avaiable for humans to ever be evil. In doing so, god would have destroyed the true nature of being good, which is actively choosing good over evil. In providing people with the choice between the two, god has allowed humans to be "truly good" by choosing the righteous path.
This means that in theory, god allowed Adam and Eve to perform the "original sin" so that humans would be given the oppertunity to prove that they were truly good by giving them the option of being both good and bad.
I'm an aethiest by the way, and i've studied this in detail because I find the whole argument for and against god very interesting.

These are some interesting answers though some of them are logically flawed, while others are inane. Some presume that God intended man to know good from evil. In the paradise in which Adam and Eve existed, that knowledge was unnecessary. Had they simply obeyed God and refrained from the actions He had prohibited, things would have been cool. Interestingly, in our chauvanistic society, Eve receives too much of the blame. It was Adam's passivity as he stood by and watched Eve fall into temptation that doomed all ensuing generations.

we'd be enjoying the liberty of Eden now particularly of each and every of the struggling with and unbelief and corruption we see. The fruit became right into a real literal fruit in spite of the undeniable fact that it does not say what style it became into for specific, in basic terms fruit. God informed Adam and Eve to multiply and fill the Earth so looks to me if there became into no sin interior the start, we'd be there yet enjoying issues particularly than struggeling with the worldwide because it is now.

This is further proof that the story is contradictory, or that God is one sumbitch....... Why would God command you to NOT eat and learn the fdifference between good and evil? What was God hiding from us? And, knowing not the difference between good and evil, how can Eve be guilty of sinning, if she didnt know better? Furthermore, isnt God omniscient? So, in that case, he already KNEW Eve would make the choice to disobey, meaning that this God also set me, you and everyone else up to fail.
Man, that God sure is an egomaniacal jerk.....

The story of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden is a parable, NOT a literal truth. It can be seen as illustrating how beings who existed in paradise were content and showed little ambition to work and grow. Therefore Lucifer (which is literally latin for Light Bringer) introduced the polarity of good and evil, which pushed man from the complacent existence of paradise into the world of polarity where rapid spiritual growth could occur. Spiritual growth is movement towards the love and light of God, so by introducing man to the knowledge of good and evil Lucifer literally drove us toward the light.

well they were told to not eat of the fruit. thats it given everything else with only one rule. then eve went against god and then adam was offered the fruit and he made a choice he would sin with eve instead of upholding gods one and only commandment. and you can see that pattern repeat every single day.

God set them up! If they didn't know that disobeying God was bad because they had no knowledge of right and wrong, then they are not at fault. This also make God look like a giant jerk for making women suffer so much with reproduction!
