I ate some kind of poppy seed dressing yesterday then today I got a call about a job ive been waiting on for weeks. They want me to take a drug test this evening now im scared im gonna fail. Should I tell them I ate it or is that silly? I heard that it shows up as opium! Also since im already on the topic, can poppy seeds make you high? if you eat alot? not that im gonna try just curious lol.

It could show up so yes you should tell them. Regular poppy seeds don't make you high and I'm not sure at what quantity they will show up in your tests, but given you just had dressing, it shouldn't be a huge quantity in your blood stream.
Anyhow..just tell them. They may giggle, but better safe than unemployed.
Pre-employment drug tests are BS. Employers shouldn't be so lazy when it comes to determining a bad employee, and I've had a number of people work for me in the past that drank a "magic potion" and passed with flying colors, even after a major bender.

Maybe if you drank it by the gallon.... (If a person has a positive drug-test, they will always do a more sensitive test and/or re-test to confirm it.) EDIT: Must correct errors from a couple of other posters. Poppy seeds have NOTHING to do with cocaine. Cocaine comes from coca leaves. Poppy seeds are related to opium -- both come from poppy plants. So a postive drug test from poppy seeds would suggest narcotic use (either a prescription drug like codeine or morphine, or an illicit one like heroin.) So the next step after a positive test would be to question the person about the use of legal prescribed narcotics, and then do more detailed tests to determine the precise metabolite found in the urine.

You will show possitive for it but on a very small level. If you tell them that you have eaten poppysed whatever then they will know to look for it.
They should be able to distinguish the difference unless you literally sat and ate a lb of just poppy seed.
Because when you actaully do drugs that contain the same things as poppy seed you will test very high for it.
So you should be clear just let them know what your concerns are. But dont worry about it.

Eating food (e.g. muffins) that contains poppy seeds can result in a false positive for opiates in a drug test. Although the drug opium is produced from the unripe fruits ("seed pods") rather than the seeds, all parts of the plant can contain the opium alkaloids.
This was confirmed by the presenters of the television programme MythBusters. One participant who ate an entire loaf of poppyseed cake tested positive for opiates just half an hour later. A second participant who ate three poppy seed bagels, first tested positive two hours after eating. Both tested positive for the remainder of the day, but were clean 18 hours later in the morning.

First, poppy seeds themselves can not make you high. Yes, there is opium in poppy seeds that if manufactured correctly is cocaine, and unfortunately you will test positive for opium in your system. I think you should make them aware that you had poppy seed dressing. In the future, poppy seeds and drug test do not mix.

Yes you will probably test positive for Opiates because that compound can stay in your system for 72 hours. It also depends on how much you ingested. I would be up front and tell them that you consumed something containing poppy seeds.I know this because I market and sell the urine test kits for drugs.

No. I watched Dr. Know a few weeks ago and they did a test on that. The answer is no. You'd have to consume a awful lot of them to show up on a drug test.

You could fail. Tell them about your concern. A friend of mine failed his test after eating a roll with poppyseeds on it.
