I got a test perm (meaning only one strand was permed to see if it would hold). I don't know how to maintain it. A day after I got the perm I washed my hair and brushed it and was sad to see that it didn't last. Well, a few days later when I washed my hair again (I have uber long hair so it is a long process to wash it and it is done a few times a week), I noticed the curls were back.

How do I keep the curls once my hair is dry? Do I not brush it but just finger comb? I want to get my whole head done, but not if it is going to disappear when my hair is dry.

DO NOT brush or comb your hair is it will only cause the curl to frizz or droop. Use a pick (or a very wide tooth shower comb) to de-tangle your hair. In regards to drying your hair...never use a hair dryer or it will cause fly-aways and frizz. If you can, use a soft sculpting product and allow it to air dry. If you need to use a dryer, make sure you have a diffuser on it.

I use Pantene Styling Milk that softens my hair for looser waves but it still keeps the definition and curl. (Plus, it doesn't give you the stiff look like mouse does). I let my hair air dry and I scrunch it once I use the styling milk. Once dry (or mostly dry), I take a light styling spray and scrunch it again to hold the curl. It allows my hair to still be soft and natural looking but I don't loose the curl or definition.

Hope this helps.

Maintaining A Perm

When I had mine done a couple years ago (and I had hair all the way down to my butt at that time), I really didn't do anything special. I used my normal shampoo and conditioner and air-dried my hair (to this day, I still don't use a blowdryer). I would either take a wide-tooth comb and go through my hair while I still had conditioner in it in the shower, or I'd wait until it was dry and finger-comb it.

That freakin perm lasted me over a year before I got sick of it and cut it all out. Never again will I do that to my hair. Now I just dye it all sorts of funky colors :-P

If the curl disappears when your hair is dry return to the salon and explain the situation. A perm sould last until it grows out. The curls will loosen up over time as your hair grows but they should stay until cut or chemically removed from the hair.
You are correct in not brushing your hair. To encourage curl use a mousse and/ or a curl creme. These products are rich in conditioners and styling aids that help keep the curls bouncy, fresh and prevent them from drying out.
Another tip is if you blow dry your hair use a defuser and also use the dryer on a low speed. Maintaining control over the air flow will also prevent the curls from going to frizz

Don't brush it. If anything just use a pick. When you are drying your hair "scrunch it" (like squeezing up in your fist).

Moisture, moisture, moisture. Dry with a diffuser and use a curling serum.
