In today's age many moms have very little options to stay at home due to financial issues. Some go to work because they are single parents, while others need that 2nd income in the family (and not every 2 income family is well off)
Why do you think that some kids from families with working moms turn out okay and other's don't. By "turn out okay" I mean the kids stay in school, don't get pregnant, stay off drugs, and can transition into successful adulthood where they can handle a steady job and be productive members of society?

David, that is a fact, but for example in my case, my husband is unable to earn enough money for our family to survive (he earns less than poverty level)

Parents despite the working strain must spend time with their kids. It is easy to come home, be tired and when the kids say " I am going out" you say "OK" and do no followup. It is also important to assign them household chores and ensure they are being completed. It is important to stay on top of their academics. I am married, have two children and my husband and I both work full time jobs. I work a second job two evenings a week. I take them with me to this job and pay them to help me file, take messages from the phone, empty trash cans and photocopy items for me. It allows me to spend time with them, teach them some basic skills and to show that pulling together we can get the job done quicker. We try to do something with them once a week. Go to the football game on Friday night, the movies on Saturday afternoons, the pool on Sundays, early morning yard sales on Saturdays, pizza on Sundays etc. Something, anything where they have our undivided attention for a few hours.

I don't know maybe it has to do with if the mom is a stay at home mom they kids can get away with a lot more things rather than if they are at a day care or someone is watching them. I was a stay at home mom for 2 years when my kids were born and I noticed that I was lazy at times I would put things off and just watch TV or lay down and my kids would just be playing and making a mess and I wouldn't tell them anything. Now that I work I am more energetic and I have my kids on a somewhat schedule. Very good question!! That is my opinion on the matter!! when my husband was working we were burly getting by and now that I am working we finally have enough to buy things that we want and not just stuff we need, but it's very true if the wife gets a part time job or minimum wage job sometimes that doesn't even cut it

I think the key is to find something that interests the child when they are young, for instance my daughter liked sports. Even though I secretly wanted her to play sports, I held them over her as punishment/reward. She could play as many as she wanted as long as she was behaving and responsible. So if she got her report card and made the honor roll, but had a U in conduct, she knew that she would not be playing a certain amount of games. Then I stuck to it. I was a single mother for the most part and my daughter now has her masters and college was an athletic scholarship (up to the masters). By high school I was letting her for the most part make decisions herself, but I stayed very involved with everything, her friends what they were doing, where they would go. When she would get mad at me she would tell me I was the nosiest mother alive, that none of her other friends were questioned like she was. When she was getting her masters she thanked me for taking an interest in her life and told me she realized it wasn't just because I was nosy.
Raising her had many joyous moments, but it was also the hardest thing I've ever done.

I think kids that see both parents working and be successful already have the idea of that is what life is like and adapt and follow in the parents footsteps. They show the kids that multi tasking both jobs, family and getting them to school is possible.
The busier a family is the less trouble the kids get into.
Mom's that stay home are depressed, miserable and most of the time over weight. The kids will then adapt that lifestyle.
You have to lead by example and show them how to do it by doing it yourself.

The same thing happened even when the Moms were home all the time. It just goes down to how crappy some parents are, and how crappy some people (the kids) are themselves.

I can only answer for myself. I stayed home for about 4 yrs of her life. Then, her father was working day shift & I started 2nd shift so someone was with her. Next, I got on day shift, & she had an after school day care program which was great. Spend as much quality time as you can with your kids. Read to them watch TV & talk about what you watched. Ask them what they're upset about, what their dreams are....let them know that you care.

It's all about taking the free time you do have with your kids seriously and making sure they feel loved.
A lot of kids who act out in the ways you decribe do so to grab attention or to take revenge on parents they feel ignore them.

I know I am not really answering you question here but there have been a NUMBER of studies done that prove that that second income primarily goes to pay for day care. Does that make any sense at all?

I think it has to do with staying involved with your child. Ask questions about their lives daily. Know where they are at and who they are with. I have a 15 year old and he gets tired of answering questions, but he also knows he is not out of sight, out of mind and I'm always thinking about him.
