Smart and very very energetic. They get bored easily so constantly be looking for new games to play with him. Make sure you start right away on walking him on a leash, they are herding dogs and will try to herd anything from children to cars. Be careful when looking them in the eye as that is a sign to begin herding, they will run back and forth on each side of you and try to herd you. Tell children to be careful bc when they herd if whatever they're herding doesn't move they will nip a little. Make sure to get lots of trainning bc as I said they are very smart the one I adopted could get out of his crate without even batting an eye and could open doors unzip purses.... you get the idea. As long as you get him trained and get him planty of exercise you'll have a wonderful dog. As I said they are very smart so you'll be able to teach him almost anything, just be perpared to get him alot of exercise when I goit mine I lost 10 lbs in a month keeping up with him. Good Luck

Border Collies are herding dogs and they herd sheep, cattle, and sometimes goats. Border Collies are very smart and easy to train, but these are active and busy dogs, if you don't give them something to do.... they will find something to do and it just might be digging out the grass. Border Colie or no Border Collie give your dog something to do, like a walk, Your dog gets entertained as well as excercise and you get a little excerise too.

Smart, active, with great endurance. If they have a job to do, they're happy. If they're not mentally stimulated and they get bored, watch out... they will try to entertain themselves by digging, herding people, etc.

A tired Border Collie is a happy Border Collie. Frisbee, Flyball, Agility - Borders tend to excel at these sorts of activities!

The border collie is a great dog. I grew up with one. They like to work or get plenty of exercise or else they get bored which leads to bad habits. They were bred to herd sheep in the scottish border country, hence the name border. They are highly intelligent and eager to please. They make wonderful pets. They are great with kids because kids like to run and play and so does the dog. It my bark excessively, I know my grandpa's does, and they might show some jealousy with other dogs. They are easy to train but harsh or overbearing training can make it to submissive which ruins the dog. Make sure to brush regularly because the under coat can cause some bad matting. Hope you have good times with you good friend.

My mom had a border collie and I couldn't stand that dog! It was so freaking hyper and ran around the house jumping on the top of the couch and running off when you opened the door to leave! It also was kind of aggressive towards my kids if they were playing she would run after them and knock them down and nip at them. She would growl at them if they got too close to her hind end. Maybe it was just that dog but it convinced me and my mom never to own one in the future! I just don't think they are good to have around kids.

We had one at the airport I used to work at, scare birds off the runways. Pretty good dog, love to work-keep them busy otherwise they'll be herding you. The one they used, had 1 handler that would take her home. Dog was very attached/protective to her, not sure if that's normal with that breed or not, kind of a one person dog.

The are smart dogs who like to have a "job" to do. You need to keep it busy so it does not become destructive. You can take him or her walking with a doggie back pack to give him or her a "job," but they excel at agility and such. Obedience training is a must, as with any breed.

originally developed int he scottish highlands as a herding dog, they are a steady, highly intellgent animal...but they can be difficult to train--very headstrong, but sensitive and timid. They have been known to herd just about anything(children, other pets, even groups of adults. They shed in massive amounts and need plenty of excercise.

Very intelligent, energetic dogs...Need a large amount of exercise and interaction time with their owner to be totally content. If left to their own devices they have been known to open doors, drawers, etc. out of boredom from lack of something to do...They tend to be one-person dogs, attaching themselves to their owner like a leech-in a good way of course. :) This is a dog I would love to have someday-when I am sure I have enough time and energy to devote to him/her...
