When humans reached the point in their evolution that they were able to think abstractly, and communicate abstractions with one another (language evolved), they were faced with the realization that they were all going to die. They were also faced with imponderable questions like 'What holds the sky up?', and 'Where does lightening come from?' Lacking the means to extract meaningful answers from nature, they would make up answers based on the supernatural, and accept them as a matter of 'faith'. Some of the smarter ones figured out that if they could convince their fellows that they could communicate with these 'deities', that they could get fed and clothed without having to hunt, or work for it... thus, priests. As time went on, the priests figured out that they could control people by way of these beliefs... thus power... and get them to give up their stuff in exchange for protection from these dieties... thus, wealth.

The only thing that has changed since then is that the scam has gotten more sophisticated... and the sheep have gotten more and more gullible.

I think you're right. If we spin this a little further, god was cast out of the garden of eden, not mankind. But as I usually say, if he ever existed, he probably ran off to some far away galaxy to create a more perfect form of life after realizing what a mess he made with mankind.

Man has wallowed in their own evil, God or not man makes choices. I think religion is a set of rules and boundaries to keep the majority of the populations from committing the huger offenses. I kinda think religion is a dying thing. Kind of sad that it is because I think that if there is no religion then there would be way more chaos. Those who blame God for taking away the "fun" will do more at will because the fear of God would be gone. Thus creating greater evil doings.
