My second born son has so far failed to learn how to speak. He only makes the Ku sounds to everything. He can imitate may things like dancing, hand motions, can play computer games, can copy letters and numbers, but he cannot imitate speech. He loses interest very fast when i try to get him to say something. His elder brother is now 8 yrs old and is very vocal. We have very few speech theraphists here i have to struggle with him. Any ideas on how to boost my efforts? The day he will talk will be the best day of my life. Any help out there? Thanks.

I would suggest that behavioral issues are the concern. When the boy needs to speak to fill his needs he will speak. I suggest that if he doesn't ask in speech for something he wants, that you simply do not respond to him. Make sure his basic needs are met....such as food, shelter, clothing, affections, etc. But if he will not ask for a treat, withhold such treats. If he will not ask for a toy, do not give him the toy and so forth. Necessity is the mother of invention, when he wants something badly enough, he will learn to ask for it.

He is 5 and has not said one word? I would be very concerned that my child has not spoken at all by age 5. You really need to get him evaluted by a speech therapist. May be your child's doctor can direct you to some resoucres in your area. Good Luck!

I had a bit of trouble actually talking. But- Have you tried singing with him yet? If nothing else, it will get him used to using his vocal cords.

Another thing I've read of some parents doing is refusing to get things their kids want, until they actually talk and ask for it.

Good luck!

Have you considered that he might have a hearing problem? Take him to his pediatrician to have his hearing checked. If that's not the problem, some kids just don't speak til they have something to say. Try working on simple words, like 'bath' and 'ball' and 'Mama' and 'Daddy' or simple to say objects around the house, or name colors.

If its any consolation, Albert Einstein didn't talk until he was 5. Give him time.
