U.S. Secret service now carries the FN P-90. It is a fantastic weapon, very lethal, armor piercing ammo, small rounds enabling them to have 50 round magazines. Extremely high rate of fire and low recoil enabling accurate bursts of fire. Since it is a bullpup design, the overall length of the gun is very short.
It is primarily a close quarter combat weapon, in the same class as the MP-5. Neither it or short barreled MP-5's are well suited for long range operations. For long range applications I think the HK G36 is top dog right now. It will soon be replaced by the HK XM8 or the FN 2000.

They are issued such weapons during assignments that might require them.
A common weapon used by government agents are different variants of the H&K MP5, although that's a submachine gun, not an assault rifle. By the way, an uzi is also a SMG.
Assault rifles are in their own class, as they fire an intermediate size cartridge (bigger than a pistol bullet, but smaller than a rifle bullet), and have select fire (single shot or full auto, with some models having 3 round burst).
A secret agent is not going to be walking around carrying an assault rifle for general purposes. It all depends on the assignment he/she is on. More than likely, a tactical team would be used rather than a secret agent for assignments that would require such weapons.

Its hard to be a secret agent carrying around an assault rifle. They are hard to conceal and tend to attract attention.
