No, not just the US. It is a matter of logistics and interoperability. Most assault rifles used by NATO countries use 5.56 X 45.
M-4, M-16, HK 93, HK G36, HK G41, Sig 551, British L85A1, the Israeli Galil, FN M249, FN 2000, HK XM8, the French FAMAS, Styer AUG
Russian AK 102, 104 and 105's are all 5.56 X 45 for Export to Eastern European countries that jooined NATO.
Even the AK-47s being produced for the Iraqi army by Arsenal of Bulgaria are being issued in 5.56 X 45.
The list goes on and on.

5.56 x 42 rounds are one of the two main type of ammunition that NATO agreed where the standardised ammunition for all NATO forces. The other type is the 7.62mm round.
This means that nearly all countries that are members of NATO will use assult rifles that fire one of these two types of rounds. In general, the 5.56 round is more popular to be used in weapons.
The most commonly used firearms that have 5.56mm rounds as standard are:
M4 Carbine, M16 (USA)
FAMAS G2 (France)
G36 (Germany)
L85 A2 (UK)
Steyr AUG (Austria)
TAR 21 (Israel)
Other non NATO countries also use 5.56 ammo. China has export versions of its weapons for 5.56 ammo though the Chinese army will use a 5.8mm standard cartridge. Russian forces also use a different cartridge in their AK-74 and AN-94 rifles: 5.45mm.
Plus. To the above user: The P90 uses special 5.7 x 28mm armour peircing cartridges and not 5.56 NATO rounds.
