Most of it is good, don't agree with the anti-breeder part because if all good breeders stopped their programs then BYB's and puppymills would be the ONLY people out there breeding. Responsible owners don't breed dogs for just any reason and take great care and consideration in those decisions. So I also don't agree with the spay/neuter line as I compete my dogs in SchH and weightpull. I do not crop my dogs ears but I am not against that either, tail docking is stupid and cruel. And personally, I do not trust most veterinarians so I give all my dogs shots (except rabies since I need county registration for this) and am better at canine care than most of the veternarians I have met over the last 40 years. Having said that; I believe this code to be good doctrine for the AVERAGE dog owner, but when it comes to professional owners and breeders then some of these do not apply.

The code applies for all dog owners and breeders. No one should consider owning a pet if they are not going to take full responsibility. While some breeds do tend to be more aggressive than others, they all have the genetic potential for violence as all breeds are desended from wolves. BTW I have temporary custody of my neice's Blue Steel Pit.... she's the sweetest most gentle dog I've had the pleasure of caring for.

it is a very nice code :)
I grew up with bullterriers and now i own a bulldog cause we also have that BSL over here . But the BSL over here includes not only pits ...it includes all bullterrier breeds (staff, am staff, pit, am pit, english bullterriers and a lot of other breeds like mastiff , Tosa Inu ect ).It depends on the state where you living . Over here it is like this ..you allowed to own that kind of breed if
you can show an clear letter of conduct (no police record at all)
your landlord (if you don't own the house) allows you to have that special breed .
You can pay the dog tax for that breed (around 600 € = 700 $ a year )
The dog has to be on the leash all the time and wear something that stops it from biting (dont know the english word for it )
But here (in Germany ) we don't have killing shelters at all .
Who knows what is more crueler ?Lock them up lifetime or kill them :(
anyway i went ot ..sorry for that

There is a lot of debate over Pitbulls, and here's my take: Pitbulls are KNOWN to be agressive, not matter how loving the family is. It is in there genes. There will always be that risk in Pitbulls, Rotts, etc.
Example 1:
My neighbors had a Pit that was the most loved, sweetest, gentle dog in the world. They let him sleep with their 2 yr old and he'd be the first one to dish out a good dose of kisses...then one day, out of the blue with no abnormal signs, he attached a neighbors beagle and the neighbor. He escaped from his fence and just attacked. The dog was put to sleep the next day for fear that it would continue to turn.
Example 2:
A family that I have known for years had a Rott. Same as #1, the dog was sweet, loving, etc. until one day the 13 yr old daughter was laying on the floor and the dog decided to attacked her face, which lead to surgery to cover the scars left.
If people want to take the chance of owning these animals, they need to accept the responsibilities that come along with them. If they don't want the responsibilities, don't own the agressive breeds and quit complaining.

I love pit bulls. I have always wanted one, but I love in an apartment and most apartments won't take them. When I get a house I fully intend to adopt one. I have been around one all my life and have never had a problem with one they have all been very friendly. It's not the breed it's the owners a=that can give them a bad name. Any dog can be bad if not trained correctly.

Have u heard the saying, " All dogs go 2 heaven"? There are never bad dogs, but bad masters. Dogs should be treated with care and trained properly. They should be socialised properly. I have 3 labs and a dachshund and luv my dogs and will never trade them for a million or watever. A strange thing about my dogs is the dachshund, though smallest, dominates labs. Keep up the good work.

Correct, the code applies to ALL dog owners.
I have a pet peeve about people with dogs that already have a bad reputation but insist they have the spiked collar, chain or some other "tough" accessory on the dog- yet insist they are a "sweetie-pie". they just are perpetuating the reputation....

That pretty much sums up what every owner of any breed should follow. Pits are unjustly accused of so many things. There are plenty of other breeds who bite just as often, even if less damage is done. You don't hear about the family golden retriever who bites the next door neighbor, but you do hear about every pit bull, or pit mix who even looks at the neighbor funny. Breed specific legislation is racism in my opinion. They are going to make certain breeds extinct because of how people raise certain breeds. Sad but true, especially since the public won't get involved enough to stop it. The few bad apples in the breed are going to kill the breed.

The code "should" apply to all dog owners. Unfortunately, many people assume that because their dog is not a pitbull, it's perfectly acceptable for them to be untrained, unsocialized, and running the streets.
I have 2 pitbulls, and would never get rid of them because of someone's ignorance. In fact, I take them out and about and have actually changed several opinions of people who hated or didn't trust pitbulls.
