We raised Japanese Akita's and never did any of them turn on us at any time. They are very loyal dogs, but are serious pack dogs. They will protect your children with their lives, sometimes even from other kids if they feel threatened. They are beautiful dogs though, big but beautiful.
Then there is the Shiba Inu which has the appearance of a small fox like dog, which I never had.

I think they are beautiful, wonderful dogs. If you are planning on getting one, I suggest checking out an Akita rescue in your area. They can give you lots of info about temperment, training, and answer most of your questions.

Akitas are willful, headstrong dogs. If you don't take the upper hand as pack leader when they are puppies, you'll have a hard time when he's full grown.

They are great dogs. Very protective and hers is very sweet and loving. He is good with other people and loves to walk at the park and meet people.
He does shed quite a bit but he is a beautiful dog.
