I agree. Many of the questions here could be answered by reading some good commentaries. The question is - how many people are willing to slow down and read something new instead of relying on opinions without substance? Or how do you judge what has true substance, and have too many people become satisfied with a shallow set of opinions? Sorry to answer your question with another set of questions. I'm going back to Cleon Skousen and Hugh Nibley's commentaries myself.

Actually, FIERCE, you can get opinions at a library--many articles that you'll find archived there are full of the writers' opinions on politics, social sciences, etc. Don't think for a minute that because the person who wrote something managed to get it published, their authority and opinion shouldn't be questioned.
And as for the main question posed--of course people read! Yahoo! Answers doesn't seem to be a substitute for looking up information (as some other sites like wikipedia and google might be) but a way to mimic how people interact as well. If I stained my skirt while at work, I might call a friend or two to ask the quickest and neatest way to clean it out, or I could pop onto Y!A and get immediate responses. If I were wondering why our fingerprints are always the same even though our skin replaces itself constantly with new skin, I could either ask my friend in medical school, or post it on Y!A. Right?

That's a wonderful question. Unfortunately, the answer is not so wonderful. Have you ever watched Jay Leno's 'Jaywalkers' segment, on the Tonight show? The sad truth is that the boneheads that appear in that bit are a representative cross-section. The sad truth is that Joe Blow American is a dumbass... and so is his old lady.
Only a very small segment of Americal society reads for the enjoyment of reading, or for the enjoyment of learning. I have encountered many people in their 30's, 40's, 50's, who claim that the last time that they read a book was when somebody made them do it, as a high school or college course assignment.
It is a national disgrace.
One thing that I would feel very comfortable betting on... that most of the people who DO read to increase their knowledge are atheists/agnostics... and that most of those who don't read at all are Christians.

read plenty but also agree the Internet has become a way to gain a lot of information without reading. think the Internet usage should be a " back up " source for research not a primary one.

You are assuming they would get the same answers you have.
And this place is for finding out the opinions of others... what they believe, how they see life, etc... I don't think I'm going to get that at the Library... and I'll only get that on the Internet in places like this. This place isn't a test, or a school...

for some people it is a way of comunicating with others and
finding out about where they are from. No just doing to the
library or putting on the news. The real people who are on
the net, or just as interesting that the television and the library.

Many people post questions here not to get info, but to GET UNDER YOUR SKIN! You have no right to tell people what lifestyle choices to make, it's their choice if they want to make the internet a lifestyle choice There, DID THAT GET UNDER YOUR SKIN?

People ask questions on here because of one of two reasons:
1. They want answers fast
2. They just want opinions
You can't get opinions from the library.

I still love to read good books, but I also love the personal communication you get here. On YA, you can get a large variety of opinions on the things you read! It really expands your horizons, a lot like going to college.
