could you please write down some symptoms of various types of mental illness because i used to have a friend i really cared about and i'll always wonder whether he may have had a problem there. like, sometimes, he would seem like he was in a completely different world, completely detached and he never knew when we would be able to meet. like he had problems with his nerves or something. he mentioned this to me once. also, we would hang out from about 10 am to 3 pm and then despite wanting to spend more time with me, he would have to drive back home and he got nervous. like he was about to have an attack or something. it's really hard to explain but i could recognize something was wrong from his facial expressions, he would be totally detached from everything but the thing is he does have a job. do people or can people who have a serious mental illness work?

he lived alone and was able to take care of himself perfectly but i sensed something was very wrong.

i went to visit him once because i felt something was very very wrong and when i got there he was not able to talk to me for even 2 minutes. when he opened the door i saw tears in his eyes. i then called him a few days later and said we should go to the doctor but he refused to. gradually we lost touch but i still love him.

thanks.

i went to the doctor myself but nobody wanted to help me with him. they said he would have to come there.

so if his condition become unbearable?? who will help him? why did the doctors let me down in wanting to help him? why didnt they just get there and drove him to the hospital

sounds like panic disorder. when people have panic attacks and start fearing the next attack this is a panic disorder. Panic attacks include: feeling of going "crazy" or dying, nausea dizziness, rapid heartbeat, and feelings of being out of control. People with panic disorders tend to isolate themselves because they fear of having a panic attack around others and can also develop some paranoia. Many people with this feel detached almost as if they are watching what is going on from outside of their own body. This disorder is very treatable with medications and therapy. However, he will have to be the one that initiates getting help. Yes people with serious mental illness can work. Try to get him to make an appointment with a psychiatrist and let him know he is not alone and that there are many people that deal with this.

You probably sensed correctly. Mentally ill people are very painful people to work with and should only be cared for by a professional. It sounds as if your friend might be bi-polar.

I have a friend who is a nurse who works with extremely mentally ill people. I asked her to sum up madness and she told me, "you know Tony, we are all mad at some level. The difference is in how much control one has over that madness."

Your friend may have been bi-polar, but we all are mad on some level. Some of us have a certain amount of Obsessive-Compulsive behaviors...I mean, we HAVE to brush our teeth every morning and night, right? Or, we sometimes experience Attention-deficit disorder; how many times have you forgotten something? etc. etc. etc.

It sounds as if your friend understood his troubles. The only thing he has to do now is come to peace with his madness.

Sounds like generalized anxiety disorder or anxiety toward social situations. It was not that he did not like you. We want to do many things, but our anxiety keeps us from it. Yes, some of us do work. He may have isolated himself even at work-in an office or without talking to coworkers.

Bi-Polar and manic-depressant.......there are times of fun....laughter.....happy talk...normalacy..these are manic times....that then go srtaight into wanting to be alone....pulling away.....moody...mean....these are depressant times.....
Bi-polar are alot like this.....there is madication that will help the person deal with these changes...but they have to want to help them selves and take the medication. Without it....it can get very bad.....to the point of being physical and harmful......
Yes...they can hold jobs....some very high positions actually.
I have a close friend...who's husband is manic-depressant...and he is the president of the labor union of a large auto company. But without his medication..he is dangerous.

By him becoming suddenly uncomfortable around you, it sounds like social anxiety. Yes, many people with mental illness can work.

maybe he really didn't want to be around u anymore. yes people who have a mental illness can work but if it's too severe then they usually get disability. are you trying to save him? don't get your feelings hurt.
