Are you asking what is the hypothesis behind dogs barking? Because they hate intruders and being overly protective of the owner. It is like asking why does a baby hippotamus grows fierce when someone goes near it's mother. Same reason.
or are you asking why do dog bark? because that's how they are programmed. Why do cow moo or why do horses neigh. Same reason. Why are we able to speak our minds? Because our parents taught us.
