Whatever you want to say and how you want to let him down, he doesn't want to hear it. Is it someone new or someone you are currently with that you no longer want to be with. If he is new, then say you are not interested in him in that way. If you have dated a few times, then tell him that you have learned enough about him to stay Friends, but you don't see a long term relationship on the horizon. If he has been your boyfriend for a long time and you want to dump him, then say that you can't imagine growing old together and you are looking for something else.

If you say he isn't good enough for you, it can mean one of two things. You are looking for a saint, (and your sex life would be so dull) or your looking for someone who makes more money. ( So your a gold digger and he isn't a good prospect) So basically you are looking for someone you are not good enough for, but you hope he doesn't realize it.

What would be the purpose in telling him? Will it make him a better person? Will it help him be good enough for another person? Or will it make you feel better?

There is a time to have compassion for another human being and not do what your ego is telling you to do.

I don't feel it is your place to tell him he is not good enough, because there are many women out there that he would be fine for. Truly your reason is selfish. But you need to look at the hurt it would cause. Do you wish to hurt him and make him lose confidence in finding another person? That kind of pain is unnecessary and self-fulfilling. I would hope that you have more character than that.

And if you were too good for him, your actions will definitely lower you to a level far below him. And who is the better person now?

I like the poem idea, but I'd say it a different way:

I think you're really cute and all
Your nice down to the letter
But I think I have to let you go
Cuz I think I can do better.

It's not about the way you look
or how much bread you make
In either case, it's not enough
That's why I want to break

Face it, boy I'm outta your league
Though you may never quite know why
my suggestion to you is this:
Crawl under a rock and die.

Be truthful with him without pulling the guy's heart out and stomping on it. For instance, tell him that you are looking for something different in a person and that you feel like the two of you wouldn't be a good mix. If he says something like, "I can be that guy", then tell him that you appreciate all that attention and everything, but it isn't a matter of "being a certain way", but more on the lines of feeling a "spark"; its not something you can just create...etc..etc...

You don't have to let him down easy, but telling him he's not good enough for you is just mean and wrong. If you must give him a reason for breaking up, then just say that you two are incompatible.

Telling someone they're not good enough for you will be hurtful, no matter HOW you phrase it. If you REALLY want to let him down easy. Keep that information to yourself.

What do you gain by doing that, besides being mean? Just let him down without being so honest.

just be straight with him....tell him it has been fun (if it has), but that you want more out of life and a partner who ...(fill in your desires here) and that he does not fit into your plans for the future..then give him one last great shot of leg so he will always remember you and the break-up will go easier for him..
