A teraspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water usually helps - or something like Eno's or Andrews liver salts!

I usually use a teaspoon of baking soda in water, too. It chemically reacts with the acid, converting its pH from acidic to more base. It tastes NASTY, though.
One warning about drinking baking soda: it can throw off your electrolyte balance, just like eating way too much salt. Make sure you drink a whole glass of water before or afterwards, or you'll get dehydrated and feel equally bad in the rest of your body.
Those acid reflux meds like Prilosec are now over-the-counter without a prescription, too. You take 'em every day to prevent attacks and heal esophagal injury from previous heartburn.

I have acid reflux and my doctor says that mint of any kind, including peppermint is a no-no. He said it causes more heartburn, same with milk. They do temporarily make the burning go away, but do not help with the acid levels. If you are having chronic problems, stay away from dairy, chocolate, mint, and caffiene.
I recommend some plain bread/rolls. Something that will help absorb the acid. A piece of bread and you should feel it go away shortly.

Absolutely, I have to agree with MOM_KNOWS_EVERYTHING.
Peppermint of nearly any description, and baking soda in water.
If you are getting a lot of heartburn and/or acid-reflux, it might be a good idea to try to find out why this is happening.

How about a drink? Take 1 teaspoon of baking soda & dissolve it in a glass of water. Drink it all down as fast as possible. It usually gives me relief if not a cure.

Liquorice or Aniseed are good for relief of heartburn sometimes milk. But the trick is to find what is causing it in the first place ie too much pastry in one's diet, spicy foods etc etc.
