I'll be traveling to France and would like to ship some wine home. I don't mind paying taxes and duty, but would like to know if it can be done and how to go about doing it.

Most likely, depending on where you reside in the US. However, it is never legal to ship wine via the USPS, so make sure that you are not using a carrier that utilizes the USPS once the package is in the USA.

It depends on your state's law.

Of course you can always try to bring the wine with you (though you are subject to customs on anything over a liter - but it's usually to much bother for customs to do it -- they have terrorists to catch, after all -- unless you have at least 10 bottles, PROVIDED YOU DECLARE IT! Otherwise go to your favorite wine store and ask if they will "clear" your wine for you through a licensed importer but be prepared to wait until the wine is consolidated onto a container unless you are willing to pay astronomical shipping fees. In three states (CA, MA and TX) and D.C. retailers can also be importers which may save a bit for you. This has also been recently a court decision in another state - Washington - but it's being appealed. In some states - NY as example - there are specialty importers that do nothing but clearing for stores.

No service shall be rendered in the transportation of hazardous waste. Hazardous waste is a
solid waste that meets any of the criteria of hazardous waste as described in Section 261.3 of
Title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
(h) The only alcoholic beverages that UPS accepts for transportation are wine and beer. Packages
containing wine and beer are accepted for transportation only from shippers who are licensed and
authorized under applicable laws to ship alcohol and only on a contractual basis. To receive
service for packages containing wine or beer, the shipper must sign a contract and agree to the
provisions set forth in the approved UPS agreement for the transportation of wine or beer. All
packages containing wine or beer must have a UPS label requesting an adult signature upon
delivery. It is the responsibility of the shipper to ensure that a shipment tendered to UPS does not
violate any federal, state, provincial or local laws or regulations applicable to the shipment. All
shipments, including shipments containing wine or beer, will be accepted for transportation only
according to the terms and conditions contained in the UPS Tariff.

I was in a liquor store in Scotland, and asked if they would ship back to the US. They said that it was in violation of US customs law, but that yes they would do it. I chose not to do it, but if I had, they would have had me sign a form saying that I would not hold them responsible if US Customs seized the bottle. They say that small quantities are not usually stopped, but they could be. You can bring back a limited quantity duty free with you when you return to the US (or pay customs if you exceed this amount). Check out the US Customs web site for more info.

With the stuff that has happened recently,I'm not too sure about this. Check with UPS or FED EX. They will ship internationally. They will also quote you on the tax and duty for your shipment, now US postal service will not ship glass bottles filled with flammable liquid.

Perfectly legal. Contact any international shipper, such as FedEx or DHL. They will even be able to tell you the duty-free limit, and how much duty you will owe, if any.
