Is it inside or outside?
Outside is known as a "cold sore" which is caused by a herpes virus, nothing you can do, either you have it or you don't. Keep it clean and put some neosporin on it. Don't kiss anyone and wash your hands after touching it.
INSIDE, that's a different story--that's called a canker sore, and it's an ulceration in the soft tissue of inside lips or gums. Can be caused by trauma (hitting your gum/lip with a toothbrush!), acidic foods or even some people get them if they use tartar-control toothpaste!
Best thing for the canker sore is to clean it with a q-tip soaked in hydrogen peroxide and then let it heal.

Normally acidic foods cause mouth ulcers. To treat them, rinse your mouth with 1/2 mouth wash & 1/2 peroxide. Do it a couple times a day until gone, works like a charm!

If you have bitten your mouth u may get ulcers, also lake of b vitamins, stress, genes, other medical problems can all cause mouth ulcers. Some toothpastes containing sodium lauryate can aggravate ulcers in some people. It is nothing to do with herpes that is cold sores, and they are not mouth ulcers.

An underlying virus or high acid content in the bloodstream. Also certiain bacteria in the mouth. Usually it is a virus. If you are prone to mouth ulcer there are over the counter medications you can take daily to prevent them. Have a friend that has to take it everyday ( and i can not remember the name, your pharmacist will know) . IF she skips a dose within 24 hours she has a "cold sore", ulcer.

Eating too much fresh fruit, nuts, raw vegetables gives me mouth ulcers. I spoke to a chemist once who told me I needed more fruit in my diet. I don't agree - I could be a fruitarian easily. If it wasn't for the ulcers.

I told my dentist once that I got mouth ulcers. He said "So do I. What do you use?"
Actually, I found that Euthymol tooth paste kept them away. (If you can still get it.)

You've probably got an allergy to something you're eating. I've heard that the likely culprits are spicy foods and tomatoes. Try giving them a miss and see what happens.
