He is two years old and has a small protusion on his belly, which the doctor says is a hernia. They're waiting 10 months to see if it corrects itself.

But he is very small for his age, quite skinny, do'es really stanky poos and his hair (which was once normal) has gone quite thin, spiky and sparse.

Though he is perfect in every other way, has developed well, is very intelligent and in good health, is this all down to the hernia?

I don't think that the hernia has anything to do with what is going on. My little brother had a double hernia that had to be corrected with surgery. The smallness of age wouldn't have anything to do with it, as this goes by norms and we all know that children grow at different rates and ages. You would have to look at the hair on his mothers and fathers side of the family to determine if that was how it will be, or if he might be lacking something in his diet. The most important thing that he is perfect in every way that matters, he is intelligent and in good health.

No,no, a hernia is simply a tear in the abdominal wall, sometimes allowing the intestine to poke through. Some of the other symptoms you describe sound like malnutrition. If the intestine is strangulated, the boy may not be absorbing nutrients, that would exppain being undersized and the hair loss. The boy should be rechecked as soon as possible.

In response to "Someboy" NEVER NEVER NEVER tie anything around a hernia!! Especially on a child! That is an old wives tale and you can cause serious damage! I repeat NEVER NEVER bind a childs hernia!Always seek medical attention!

No, a hernia is just a defect in the diaphragm.
If the parent smoked or otherwise didn't take care of herself, or he is not being fed well enough could be the cause of the other problems. The stinkie poos are what he is eating now. Maybe he has allergies on top of everything else. The doc I would talk to about the hair...usually by this time they are growing it back, after rubbing it off in the crib from laying down so much.

My belly-button herniated when I was born.
I have an Outty & not an Inny.
Some problems like these can B hereditary, well that's what I've been told.
UR poor Nephew does appear 2 had his fair share bad luck, but I survived a hernia & he will 2.
I don't think there's anything 2 worry overly about, it will settle down & sometimes surgery becomes more of an intrusion than a benefit in these cases.

Build him with a good diet, looks of fresh fruit & veggies 2 give him a good start.
U R what U eat!
:)

Does your baby's bellybutton protrude when he or she cries? Don't be alarmed. This is a classic sign of an umbilical hernia — a common and typically harmless condition.

An umbilical hernia occurs when part of the intestine protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. Umbilical hernias are most common in infants, but they can affect adults as well.

Most umbilical hernias close on their own by age 2. To prevent complications, umbilical hernias that don't disappear by age 4 or 5 or those that appear during adulthood may need to be repaired surgically

I had a friend about 10 years ago who's infant had a hernia. One day at a mutual friends house a Hispanic woman told her to wrap something around it to kinda keep it pushed in. Not tight but just enough..like a scarf or something. Sometimes these old world remedies work! Not sure what she had to do but the boy is healthy as can be and the hernia went away. I don't think they ever had surgery.

Never heard of that. My daughters hair thinned and then grew in really full by 3. Not sure. Small children can get a hernia. But the other symptoms, not sure of.

Hernias are painfull and dangerous, i would get it corrected by a private surgeon immediately. How on earth can it correct itself? The reason why all those symptoms have developed is because your nephew is ill and in pain. Help him!

Your little nephews condition should really have a second opinion. My son now 24 had two major hernias before the age of 2 and if they hadn't operated they would have strangulated and killed him. So please get it checked with a different doctor.
