The degree system is one used by many Covens to show dedication, wisdom and knowledge of the craft. In most traditional covens, it is customary that one study for a year and a day to get initiated and become a First Degree Priest or Priestess. Then you must study another year and a day to acheive your Second and again for your Third Degree Priesthood levels. This may vary by coven. If you are interested in attaining the Wiccan Priesthood you should go on http://www.witchschool.com

They offer online classes that are free for First Degree Memberships and very inexpensive for everything else. Let me know if you have any other questions.

There are three degrees in Wicca. You are initiated only once, that is your first degree. At first degree you enter the priesthood and are a priest or priestess. Second degree (in most traditions) confers the rank of High Priest or High Priestess. At this point you are authorized to lead the rites and in some traditions can "hive off" to form a daughter coven. However this is usually still under the auspices of the parent coven. At third degree you become fully autonomous. The specific lore learned at each degree will vary slightly from tradition to tradition and is oath-bound material.

Magic is only a part of what Wicca is. I wouldn't rush into that without a good grasp of the other aspects. Unless you are talking about witchcraft in general, which doesn't necessarily have any religious connotation. There are several good books on that subject specifically. A quick search on Amazon should reveal plenty and will give you the opportunity to read some feed-back on each book.

What you learn during the degree training depends on the tradition you are practicing. Some do not have degrees, some only have 2,3, or 4 degrees. It is all different. The main things to know it during your training you will receive all the knowledge needed to practice the religion at your level.

Spellcraft is a skill in its own right. In order to learn spellcasting you must learn about the use of different tools. You need to learn about the use of stones, herbs, and other natural items to aid in the magic. You need to learn about correspondence, moon phases, timing in general. Again these are things you should learn while training in a degree system.

If you are not sure what tradition or path you wish to follow check this site. It gives a basic overview of various pagan religions and Wicca traditions. Some also give you books and websites for further study. You will also be able to find groups, store, and people in your area under the world section. http://www.witchvox.com/_x.html?c=trads

I would also like to recommend "Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner" by Scott Cunningham. I gives understanding of Wicca and starts you out on the use of herbs and stones in magic. It was the book I started out with. Remember to have fun while learning!!!

Wicca, like Christianity, has many different 'denominations' / 'schools' / 'camps'. Depending on the style, you will find different content in each degree. Some schools don't even use a degree system.

Making a spell is easy -- build the will, and use the tools that help you focus your will. Ultimately, you learn to dispense with the tools and use just your will and actions.

Remember though that Wicca is about honoring your pantheon, not the spellcraft. One can be wiccan without being into ritual, and one can be a ritualist without being wiccan.

In my tradition, "degree" is just another word for year. If you've been studying the Craft for one year, you're a first degree. If you've been studying the Craft for four years you're a fourth degree. Many traditions have a different degree system than mine.

You make spells by doing lots of reading and studying, and then meditate on how you should go about doing the spell. The answers will come to you. I've done only two major spells in my lifetime. I'm not BIG on doing spells. I'm not against, them, but I think spells should only be done if they are REALLY needed. The two spells I did were to ease my sister's depression, and the same thing with a close friend. Blessed be.

The degree system is as varied as there are covens. No one coven seems to handle it just like another, and for solitaries (such as myself), there no degrees.

As for spells, I admonish you (as I do all novices) to be careful! Magick (or however you wish to spell it) can be dangerous for the untrained. Just as you wouldn't (I hope) try to swim without learning how, so I hope you wouldn't jump right into spellwork without study.

Everyone wants to learn how to work spells, but so few people actually want to "walk the walk and talk the talk" that goes with that knowledge. Witches don't just cast spells willy-nilly. Magick is a tool. Used properly, it can be very beneficial. Used without proper care, it can be very dangerous!

Witchcraft isn't like Bewitched or Charmed. Spellwork takes an investiture of time and effort. If you study the Craft, then you will gain the knowledge of how to "make spells." That you have to ask tells me you aren't ready.

And in response to heresyhunter...

Cute essay. Too bad it isn't original. I've seen multiple copies of it all over the Net and for a long time prior to that. If you're going to bash someone elses' beliefs, at least have the courtesy to do it in your own words.

Sure, Wiccans get sick and have flat tires. But I don't see all the Christians running around in perfect health either. We're human, just like you. We suffer addictions and make mistakes. We go through troubled times in our marriages, and so do many Christians.

For the record, my wife and I have been together for 18 years. Our marriage is rock-solid. While I'm not a specimen of physical perfection, neither am I suffering from any life-threatening issues or constant pain. Neither of us is addicted to drugs (or anything else).

I don't lust after blood. I share living space with five cats, whom I love very much. The only thing I have ever "sacrificed" is a steak for my quarterly barbeque!

I don't win the lottery because I don't believe that magick should be used for personal gain. If I fixed it so that I won, I might take that money from someone who really needed it. Would you do the same? If you know how to fix it so that you could win the lottery, would you do so?

You, as a Christian, are supposed to live as an example to others. Do you do so ALL the time? Has there NEVER Been a time when you slipped a little? Are you PERFECT?

Neither are we. We're human, just like you.

it depends on the tradition you're studying what you learn at each degree level. first degree is generally the basic teachings of the tradition. second degree is more in depth study. third degree is usually priest/priestess level.
spells are easy to make, making them work takes practice.

try going to www.witchschool.com. there are free classes you can take so you can get a basic education.

The reason I am writing to you is that I have studied the occult for over thirty years and I have come to certain conclusions. I know that you will disagree with some of my conclusions because we have traveled different paths.

But I have the added benefit of the testimonies of those who used magic in the highest levels possible such as the Golden Dawn and the O.T.O. and then have come to faith in Jesus Christ and have now renounced magic.

All I ask is that you have an open mind and give serious attention to the things I now bring up. Remember an unexamined faith is a worthless faith.

The fact is, magic does not work. After all the talk about the "power" that people can get from magic, I have never known a more powerless group of people.

Many of those who use magic are sick all the time. They go through multiple marriages. They have money problems. Their cars get flat tires. They get their share of flues and colds. Even more seriously, they cannot beat their own drug or sex addiction. They are usually in bondage and totally powerless to change their life for the better.

If magic really worked, they would never be sick. They would win every horse race in town! They would own Wall Street by now!

They would be able to maintain a successful marriage. Witches would be picking the winning lottery numbers every week. But the fact is, when the "rubber meets the road," magic simply does not work. You can waste a lot of money and time on magic and be no better off. In fact, you will end up worse off.

Their lame duck excuses as to why they are sick or why they can't keep their marriage together or why they aren't rich, are weak and feeble.
A magical worldview is internally contradictory and hypocritical:

To say, "There are no absolutes" is to give an absolute.

To say, "Do what thou wilt, this is the whole of the law" has been used to justify everything from black magic to human sacrifice. If there are no standards, then on what grounds can witches condemn child abuse, Hitler, murder, etc? They can't.

To say "Everything is relative" and "There is no evil," and then to turn around and say that Christianity is "evil" is contradictory.

To say, "Everyone has the right to believe what they want" and then to condemn Christians for what they believe is contradictory.

To say, "Do what thou wilt" and then to tell Christians NOT to do what they wilt is hypocritical.

To say, "It is wrong to judge/condemn others," and then to judge/condemn Christians is contradictory.

A magical view of life does not correspond to reality.
a. No magic is going to make you thin if you do not stop eating. No magic will make you rich if you do not get up and go to work.

The claim of modern witches that they are reviving pre-Christian paganism is not historically true. The rituals and beliefs of modern day magic are of recent origin.

A close relative of mine who is into the occult told me that he was going to use magic to get himself a parking space in N.Y.C. I in turn told him that I would ask Jesus to get me a space. He drove around for four hours before finding a place while I found one at once and did not have to go around the block even once! His magic was not even good enough to find him a parking space!

A magical view of life is a cop out and it breeds irresponsibility. Instead of taking responsibility for their life, those who use magic always blame "bad luck" or claim that someone is using black magic against them. The truth is that YOU are responsible for the choices you make in life - not magic.

It attracts people with mental problems. Sad but true. I have seen this many, many times. The State Mental Hospitals are filled with people who were users of magic.

They live in constant fear of the powers they draw down. Hence they need the occult protection of the circles, towers, shields, charms, etc. What a terrible religion of fear!

If you depend upon trinkets such as pentagrams to protect you, you do not have any real power. To think that a stupid piece of metal or glass is going to protect you from a demon is just plain stupid.

The lust for blood is evil. It has led to horrible crimes. Killing animals and people for their "energy" is wicked as well as criminal.
Sex magic is filthy and gross beyond words and involves child abuse, bestiality, sodomy, etc. You will never have a normal satisfying sex life once you debase yourself in sex magic.

Magic is for losers. The greatest magicians all ended up broke, alone and miserable. Check to see what happened to people like Crowley. They were all losers.

Whenever a true Christian challenges them, the magicians always lose. I have challenged occultists to take their best shot and they always failed. On one occasion, a coven sent demons to kill me but I did not even get a headache!

While there is a lot of hate and lust in magic, there is no love. If you leave or reveal the secrets, they will try to kill you. I helped to move a girl from Phil. to Fla. to escape her former occult friends. If they really loved her, why did they try to kill her? If she wanted to leave the group, why did they object to her doing what she wilt?

There is no forgiveness, comfort or salvation in magic. It has no Saviour or God who loves and cares for you. The occult is lonely, sad, cold and sterile.

The Bible says that the true power behind the magical arts is Satan. Those who deny this are the dupes of the devil.
o. All you have been told about “Goddess worship” in history is a lie and has been refuted by many scholars years ago. Most of what you believe and practice was invented in the 19th century by such evil people as Crowley. The beliefs and rituals of modern witchcraft were not connected in any way with pre-Christian paganism.

These are just a few things that came to mind as I thought about what I have learned in thirty years of research in the occult. The Lord Jesus Christ has broken the power of the magic and has brought life, love and immortality to light through the Gospel. Jesus Is Victor!

The occult has nothing to offer that compares with the love of Jesus. Turn to Him in repentance. Renounce your witchcraft as the works of the devil. Burn you magic books and smash you altars. Turn or burn. Repent or perish! Jesus is Victor..
