It will help him to be more comfortable and not have pain.
The gulcosamine will help hos body manufacture the lubricant that is inbetween the bones. You give it so his body has the building blocks to make more of the snovial fluid in his joints.
It does help.
I take it for myself and I have had arthritis for about 25 years.
I take no pain meds most times now but take the gulcosamine every day. I move better and with less pain.
The dog food I feed to my dogs has this stuff in it so you do not have to give it as a suppliment. I have used it for them for years.
They do great. It would be a great thing to give your dog to help now and be good in the future.

No, it doesn't prevent arthritis, but it does help strengthen joints. One of my dogs was diagnosed as having the beginning of arthritis (probably from a racing injury) when he was 3. He's been on a low dosage of glucosamine every since as a preventative and he's 9 now and still plays like a puppy, and goes for an hour long walk every morning, and a shorter one later in the day.
Ask you vet, but I don't think it's possible to prevent arthritis, but you can treat it.

I have Golder Retrievers and one has a little arthritis in her hip. I tried the Glucosamine and she seemed to feel a little better but then I read in a medical journal (I have arthritis also) that Glucosamine combined with condroitin has no effect on the prevention of arthritis but after extended continual use may help lessen some of the effects of arthritis. I quit taking it and have taken my Goldie off it. I just make sure that her food has Glucosamine and condroitin in it and she is doing great! Talk to your vet for concrete answers.

There are several over the counter medications along with prescription medications that help prevent/minimize damage from arthritis. Glucosamine will help. So will Rimadyl. Putting them on a large breed diet works well too. There are prescription diets for joint problems too. Exercise helps as well. Talk to your vet about your concerns, they will help you create a regimine to combat any current arthritis and help prevent more arthritis.

I have a 2 yr old Sheltie that has been on Glucosamine for about 2 months. It does keep him more mobile. He was diagnosed with hip dysplasia about 6 months ago and he's my agility dog so we felt he needed some extra help. But I agree with others....exercise is the best thing! and glucosamine can't hurt either.

Yes, it wont prevent him from getting arthritis but it will help to alleviate the symptoms. All 3 of my dogs are on it, they range from 6 years to 12 years, since i have started to give them glucosamine, they seem to have more energy and my oldest seems to have more of a spring in his step than before!

It won't prevent it, but it can relieve it.
I had a dog on Rymadil for years and she did better when I started adding Glucosamine along with it.
Talk to your vet, though, before adding anything to your dog's diet to make certain it does not interact poorly with other meds or supplements.

I had a blue heeler that developed stiffness in her joints when she was about 15, I gave her half a glucosamine tablet every day and it really helped her movement. I did not start giving the tablets until she had joint stiffness, so check with your Vet, I'm not sure about giving it before problems occur. Good luck

Outside of inoculations (given by your vet), you can't give your dog anything to prevent disease ... but you can give your dog supplements and medications to help alleviate symptoms of certain diseases.
I know that this is a broad answer, but it covers conditions other than arthritis.
