It depends on where you are from as to what paper you put it in. I reccomend putting it in your home town paper, your fiance's home town paper and the paper that is most prominent where you both live now. Check out a milestone/celebration secion of a newspaper to get ideas on wording to use. The paper we announced in had a form to fill out and it put the announcement together for you for free. Some examples can be found at:
http://www.print2webcorp.com/news/portlandme/celebrations/20060910/p1.asp It's our local paper but it will give you a start! Congrats and good luck planning your special day!

The notice should be placed in the brides home town paper, the grooms home town paper, and the paper of the town the couple lives in (if different from the other two)...
If Jane Doe is marrying John Smith and they were engaged on September 1st and they plan to marry April 14, 2007 the announcement should read
Doe-Smith Engagement
Jane Doe daughter of Mr. and Mrs Bob Doe of Tinbucktoo was engaged to Mr. John Smith jr. son of Mr. and Mrs. John Smith sr. of Goo-Goo Downs on September 1, 2006, the couple plans to wed in spring 2007...
If you call the newspaper office for each paper they will walk you through the process, it usually costs $20.00 or less to run a small notice and small picture per paper...

If you go to your newspaper then you can get the sheet that you fill out it isn't that expensive but I believe they charge by the word or something.
But something to consider I was married in June and my husband and I decided not to do and engagement because there was some people who were not invited on his side of the family because they were not really considered family so we didn't want them to know how close we were to getting married so we didn't put it in the paper just something to consider if you are having any of those problems.
Congratulations!!!

Typically people write about how they met, when they started dating, how he proposed, etc. You can have a lot of fun with it.
I just wanted to say that my husband and I waited to do a wedding announcement instead. We didn't want to deal with people seeing an engagement announcement, and then asking us if they're invited. It's something you may want to consider. Or, if you think it might be a problem, you could put "Bob and Sue are planning a small wedding in December" or whatever.

It might cost to do it - depends on where you are. In my hometown, it didn't cost me anything, but in the city I live in now it costs $30.
As far as what to say, they normally have a form you fill out for that. So decide what papers you want it in (most likely just your/his hometown) and then contact the papers to see what the process is. Or go to their website and there might be a form to download on there.
Congrats!

When I wrote mine I just looked in the paper and used that as an outline. I think that it cost like $20. You can always go to www.theknot.com...there is tons on wedding advice on the website.

Look in your local paper for ideas. There is no one way right way to do it. In San Antonio it runs from 60 to 140 depending on how many lines, photo or no photo, color or no color. The only way to find out for sure is to call and ask.

You can send a "please save the date" card, indicating that you are engaged and planning to get married on a certain date. Or send a little photo card or other card. Try snapfish.com or thestationerystudio.com.
