should the u.k look for alternate methods of detention for our criminals, this is a serious question, our jails are at bursting point and there has to be some kind of solution, hanging them, shooting them etc are not sensible suggestions, maybe the americans have a good idea with island prisons, but would this work over here, there are lots of uninhabited islands owned by the uk, could we use them

The problem isn't that our prisons cannot cope with the strain, its that we have the wrong people in prison.
Minor drug offences, petty theft and the like shoul be treated in community service centres, rehabilitated and re-introduced into society. Prison should be for the extreme offences, which are thankfully on the drop. Murder, Sex Crime, Fraud and the like, should be a prisonable offence, not carrying dope

the answer is simple. put these criminals on these uninhabited islands and make them build the prison. make them harvest crops for food and work to live....the days of looking after criminals should be over.
these people are in prison for a reason, and should be treated as such. if they want to live outside the law, the why should the law protect them.
save the inland prisons for the petty crimes.

The fact of the prisons being full to bursting has more to do with sentencing policy and serious flaws in the social system than with the adequacy of prison accommodation. With society ordered as it currently is and the judges being so willing to lock people up, any new prisons will soon be filled up!

Can I just say, contrary to what the media would have us believe, prisons are not bursting at the seams at all...... this is just another myth to whip up mass hysteria. That way, the government can 'pacify' the masses by building more prisons. But the prisons they want to build will be 'on the cheap' private prisons run by badly paid and poorly trained securicor/group 4 staff. Just another 'cost cutting' excercise in my view that will not work.

2 problems solved at the same time. build an island in mid Atlantic using all of the UK"s rubbish, build a massive prison to house all our prisoners, and good ridence. A bonus, of course, is that all the do-gooders will have to follow.

the problem is the expenditure. buying the land, building the prison and then employing people willing to travel to an island, whcih would cost them too much and hence would need to be reflected in their wages. We should expand the current prisons if possible. Maybe we could start transporting them to Australia again!!!

It's a good idea but a heck of a trip to work for all the staff.
Costs would be sky high and if a riot broke out it could be hours before enough police got to the scene.

there used to be a prison boat that was decomissioned about 15 years ago i think. I say all royal navy friggats that are going to be decomissioned should be converted into prison boats, fill em up and send em on their way.
Nowhere to run.
