Tidal power generators can be used , as they rely on the flow of water through a "low-head" turbine.
Wave power generators cannot be used as they require a rapidly fluctuating water level to work.

Tidal generators rely on two energy sources: a vertical motion of water (up and down the tide level), and the direction of water flow (tide going in and tide going out).
A fast running river has a flow running in one direction only, and the water level is fairly constant, so the tidal generator would not work.
However, ANY turbine that could be set into the flow of the river will generate power. That is your solution.

The tidal flow would have to be sufficient and for the life of me, I cannot understand why the Bristol channel isn't used for this purpose. It is the second fastest tide in the world, it's predictable and will always be there. There is one type of turbine that has been invented by a Russian guy which is simplicity itself. Basically it's a turbine with a double helix, which will rotate no matter which way the tide is flowing.

Not necessary . Better methods like a paddle wheel will do a better job at a lower prices
