Your approach is good. Play with scramble many times so that learning becomes fun rather than boring experience.
ASk him to spell a word and if he spells correctly give him a small gift say a chocolate, or additional play time etc.
Also teach him how words are made of syllables and combining the syllables he can get a word. Teaching the roots of the word (where it originates from) would also help for some words.

That idea has worked for my son. Flashcards never seemed to the trick so last year we started doing them the way you describe by cutting the words down to letters and letting him spell them out. He also has to write them and use them in a sentence. we make the sentences into a game to see who can come up with the most silly statements. it has really helped him alot and gives us a fun way to study together. Good luck and remember to have fun!!!!!.

Good idea. Scrabble or childrens scrabble is supposed to be great for learning to read as well. Of course, having your child read to you is good too. The key is repetition, whether it's flashcards, reading or games or even printing the word many times on paper. Reading is really about memorizing and that takes repetition and lots of practice. Sounds like you're doing a good job.

No i think scrambling the letters will be more difficult for him than you think .have your child write each word five times. Then every night have him help you prepare dinner and while you are preparing dinner ask him to spell the words for you. That way he gets to spend time with you and learns to spell.Boys excel more when not being confronted face to face. By having your son do two things at once he will do better.

Some other ideas:

- have him practice typing them on the computer
- have him put them in alphabetical order
- have him look up the definitions in a dictionary
- have him come up with rhyming words
- have him write a story with the words

Sounds like a good idea. I always had great luck studying with flash cards, even in college. I don't know what it is about them but for some reason any time I had trouble remembering things they always worked well.

What works best for my girls is to say the word out loud and then as she writes it, spell it out loud too. Over and over with each word.
