NiMH stands for Nickel-Metal Hydride, the materials used in some battery packs. Unlike NiCad batteries, NiMH batteries do not use heavy metals that may have toxic effects. In addition, they can store up to 50% more power than NiCad batteries and do not suffer from memory effects.

Most of today's electronics use this material in their batteries like cell phones and laptops. Unless your handheld vacuum cleaner came with this type of battery you are going to be hard pressed to find one that fits with the correct power requirements.

Ni-MH batteries are essentially rechargeable batteries. To get the proper battery pack for your vacuum cleaner, I'd suggest yiou's take a look at your manual.

If possible & compatible interms of voltage, try to get one which is big on MA - Milli amperes as the longer is the ampere, the longer the battery can generate power after each charge.

The other answers tell you about the batteries. I'll add that I have seen NiMH batteries in a lot of variety and hardware stores lately. It seems that almost any place that sells regular batteries will also sell NiMH batteries.
