school homework project about bridges

Since bridges are suspended over something, there is no room for error when making them and constant expansion and contraction would mean repairs all the time.

Therefore, they install metal expansion joints at different points in the road. Those joints take the brunt of expansion and contraction, thereby making the road less likely to need repair.

These joints are made of metal and are usually placed every 100 feet or so.

The fact that the materials used and the land around it will expand and contract have to be taken into account, if a bridge was built completely solid then as the temperature changes the bridge would either be pulled apart or crushed by it's opposite sides.

Above are correct. If you can go to a Bridge you can walk along (Out of traffic flow) and you will see the expansion joints. Hey, suggest to the teacher your class do a field trip and check this out. Teacher buys lunch!

Some bridges have a roller under one end of it so that when it expands it rolls.
