You can get an understanding that there is a soul by reading about the out-of-body experiences that people that were near death had. They described things that could only be described if they were out of body. These experiences were reported by Doctors and other very objective people who interviewed these people.
So since it appears that the essence of soul exists, then what is it made of, how does it exist. That is impossible to say until you can detect it. All we can say, is that there is evidence that it exists.
For example, we know that gravity exists, but we can not point to what causes it, or what it is made up of, yet.

It is your enitire being.
I don't have a soul. I am the soul. My soul (myself) has a brain. My brain is part of my soul. The Body is part of the soul. Without the body, there is no soul!
This definition goes against the dictionary which says that it's the bodies animating force. I say no, the breath is our animating force. The soul is just the person who happens to be physical. The soul can die and the soul can resurrect. The soul can also cease to exist. Without the breath and the body, the soul (one's self) cannot live.

It's what God created out of earth and breath. He combined those 2 things and humans BECAME living souls. Nowhere does the Bible make any referrence to humans being GIVEN souls.
The short version: you don't have a soul, you ARE a soul.

Christians have a totally whacky idea of what the 'soul' is supposed to be. For the Jews of that time... including Jesus... the 'soul' was an enveloping emanation from the godhead that resulted from the community's relationship with god. The soul as a component of a human being (Christian view) is an artifact of Greek thinking on 'dualism'... which was incorporated into Christian dogma and lore by Gentile theologians, who were ignorant of Jewish (and Jesus') concept of 'soul'.
So... apart from the fact that all of this stuff is mythological nonsense, anyway... everyone's worries about what happens to their personal 'soul' are of no consequence... it does not exist.

The soul is a spark of that divine being called 'God'. We are all sparks of that divine. We the soul have a body as a vehicle to carry us through this life, we are not the body.
So it is safe to say that we, the soul have a body and not we, the body have a soul.

The soul is an animating essence held to be inseparably associated with life and the center of secret thoughts and emotions, the composite of: intelligence, mind , heart, conscience and breathe that is what soul is to me.

The soul is the energy source which powers that machine which is your body. It is housed in your blood. That is why if you loose your blood, then you die. The soul itself, is intelligent living energy. Some may even refer to it as electricity or fire.
