Atheism is lack of belief in God. People are atheists because there is no proof that god exists.
If that is an actual homework question you must be going to one of those Christian academies because it is clearly loaded and poorly written. I say this because atheism is a lack of belief, not something you believe in. You should probably answer with something like; atheists are people that don't believe in god because they don't understand god or haven't experienced him in their hearts. You'll get more points that way.
We atheists want you to get good grades so that some day you can go to a good college where instructors are at least educated enough to write a proper question. That way you get a real education and learn about the real world. That's how we make more atheists.

Atheism is a belief that there is no supenatural God figure in the Universe. Look at the word; the prefix "a" means 'not'; the root 'theos' means 'pertaining to God or Gods'; and 'ism' refers to belief.
Atheists can be spiritual people. I have been accused of a lack of spirituality, but that is a groundless assertion. I have respect for people and I feel awe at the majesty of creation; but I do not feel there is an actual supernatural Creator in literal existence.

in general, the critique and denial of metaphysical beliefs in God or spiritual beings. As such, it is usually distinguished from theism, which affirms the reality of the divine and often seeks to demonstrate its existence. Atheism is also distinguished from agnosticism, which leaves open the question whether there is a god or not, professing to find the questions unanswered or unanswerable.

arguments for atheism" means "arguments for the nonexistence of God." In the jargon of the philosophy of religion, such arguments are known as "atheological arguments." The argument from evil (sometimes referred to as 'the problem of evil') is by far the most famous of such arguments, but it is by no means the only such argument. Indeed, in the 1990s atheist philosophers developed a flurry of atheological arguments; arguably the most famous of such arguments is the argument from divine hiddenness (and the related argument from nonbelief).
Atheism, in its broadest sense, is a lack of belief in a deity or deities. The opposite of theism, this broad definition encompasses both people who assert that there are no gods and those who make no claim about whether gods exist or not. Narrower definitions of atheism typically include only those who assert the nonexistence of gods, excluding non-believing agnostics and other non-theists.
Although some atheists tend toward skepticism, and toward secular philosophies such as humanism, naturalism and materialism, there is no single system of philosophy which all atheists share, nor does atheism have institutionalized rituals or behaviors.

Atheism is the rational conclusion based on research and understanding human development that there is no god.
Agnosticism is the step that precedes atheism that there may be a god, but they're not sure yet.
Theism is the irrational conclusion based upon being told by your parents, church and society that there is a god.
Only one of these belief systems is irrational.

Thus atheism is a belief that there are is no God/are no gods.
People believe it because they see no good evidence for the existence of a God/gods.

Atheism is the belief that there is definately no god. People believe in it because they either:
a.) Reject faith and require proof for all things,
or,
b.) Have had bad experiences with theism and no longer can accept the presence of an all-knowing, all-powerful, and all-loving deity.

People do not 'believe in' atheism. 'Atheist' is a descriptive word that applies to people who DO NOT believe that god(s) exist.
Atheism is a 'belief' in the same way that NOT collecting stamps is a 'hobby'.
