That's a horrible punishment!! Some kids go home and don't have anything to eat. Even when you get out early, every student has to have a lunch. I went to a school with a kid and they ate breakfast and lunch ate school because they didn't have dinner at home.

I was never under the impression that anyone has a right to eat. The way I was raised, we earned the privilege of eating by doing chores for our parents. I would never have even thought to ask my school to feed me.
If there are schools that feed their students, then withholding such a service seems a most appropriate punishment for misbehavior.

It depends on what it is they are keeping the kid from eating. Kids can't chew gum in school during class. Kids shouldn't be snacking on soda and candy bars during class.
Are they depriving the kid of lunch? Doubtful.
Are they depriving him of dessert? Perhaps justified.
If you don't like the punishment the school provided, think of a more appropriate one and talk to them about it.
By the way, what did the kid do?

You are incorrect to equate it with corporal punishment, as that is the error such a teacher would be making if such a punishment were imposed. Schools offer lunches to children as part of providing for their basic welfare, and any school that permits the deprivation you describe is practically begging to be sued for its negligence.

The cafeteria people here will not let a child go without eating, so the teacher should not either.

If they're abusing their cafeteria privileges, I don't see why not. Make them bring their own lunch and eat at their desk.
