So it's a "REAL DIAMOND" and "WELL DEAR" (presumably you mean expensive?)
If he wants to buy you something like that, you have two options:
1. Take the gift, wear it with pride and give him something in return as a "thank you" (hot sex will probably be enough)
2. Tell him that it's a nice thought but that you think he would have been better buying something less expensive and saving the rest of the money for the future

Why are you so worried about the expense of the ring? If you know he genuinely can't afford it or if it makes you uncomfortable to accept such a large gift then explain to him nicely that it was a lovely thing for him to do but not something you can accept. You can always bring it back and get a smaller more inexpensive ring that both of you are happy with.

How long have you been together? Is it just a gift or is it indicative of a wish for further commitment from your bf (proposal of marriage)? If you don't feel comfortable taking it, just kindly decline. However, he may take some offense to that, especially if it is quite an expensive and heartfelt gift.
