The correct term to use is issuers, not providers.

Seven largest issuers of credit cards in the U.S. (in alphabetical order) as of the end of 2005 were:

American Express
Bank of America
Capital One
Chase
Citibank
Discover
MBNA

A list of ten largest bank issuers (including their outstanding credit and number of active accounts) as of the end of 2004 can be found here:

Note that since this is the list of bank issuers only, neither American Express nor Discover appear on it.

Capital One is pretty large, Capital One is really great for people new to credit. Citi Bank is extremely popular as they offer 5% back. Also Bank One is a large.
