The word's original meaning is unclear. Some authorities derive it from Hebrew ʻAzzāh "strong"; however, the ʻ in ʻAzzāh is original (from proto-Semitic *ʻzz), whereas the ʻ in ʻAzza derives from original Ġ. The oldest attested records naming Gaza are ancient Egyptian, in which it is variously transcribed as q-ḏ-t or g-ḏ-t, in an attempt to render the Canaanite sounds ġ and z not found in the Egyptian of that period. The Tell el-Amarna tablets call it Qazati[1]. 5th-century BCE Babylonian records call it Ḫazatu. In ancient Greek, it was termed Γάζα. In Hebrew, its pronunciation shifted from *Ġazzāh to Tiberian Hebrew ʻAzzāh around the first century CE, when the uvular fricatives were lost under the influence of other Semitic languages such as Aramaic. The Arabic form Ġazzah may derive from the Greek name. The earliest surviving written attestation of the name "Ghazza" in Arabic may be the Nessana bilingual entagion of 674 CE (54 AH), although the name is mentioned in pre-Islamic traditions. Other names: include 'Aza, Azzah, Beth-eglaim, Ghazzah, Ghazzeh, Maiumos, Pa-Canaan, tel al-'Ajjul, 'The Ruler Prize'. [citation needed]

Gaza is a region in Southern Israel and has significance in various spiritual encounters with Adonai. It is believed that the reason why the Gaza Strip is being fussed about every day in the United Nations is spiritual.

The apostle Philip's encounter with the first African convert to Christianity (Ethiopian man reading the book of Isaiah) happened in Gaza.

According to the international community the Gaza Strip is occupied by Israel; in particular, the United States government recognizes it as "Israeli-occupied with current status subject to the Israeli-Palestinian Interim Agreement - permanent status to be determined through further negotiation" [1]. The Israeli government disputes this, especially after the withdrawal of Israel in 2005.

Israel controls the Gaza strip's airspace and offshore maritime access. The Strip itself is under the jurisdiction of the Palestinian Authority, which also controls the Strip's border with Egypt.
