dry socket is the term used to refer to an infection which developes in the hole left by a tooth after extraction, it is where the blood clot which forms naturally after extraction, is removed or dislodged for whatever reason, thus allowing bacteria to enter. treatment is a course of antibiotics., and/or packing the socket with treated gauze.

It isn't just when you get your wisdom teeth pulled. You can get dry socket after having any tooth extracted. Dry socket means that blood does not fill up the extraction socket (or hole) where the tooth used to be (or the blood clot gets lost). The gums can not grow over that spot because there's nothing to grow over and the hole remains open. This opening causes a constant dull throbbing pain, earaches, foul smelling breath, and a bad taste in the mouth.

To avoid getting dry socket, don't do any forceful spitting or sucking though a straw for the first week. Waith a day or two after the extraction before rinsing with warm salt water. You also want to avoid carbonated beverages and alcoholic drinks. If you are a smoker, don't smoke for a few days after extraction.

A dry socket is when the blood clot inside the hole of the pulled tooth area that is supoosed to help the healing process is pulled out by a sucking motion as in smoking, using a straw....it hurts like a meany, i mean bad.

Dry socket is what the dentists call it when the tooth socket (the hole where it was) doesn't heal over right - very very painful stuff!

The wiki calls it alveolar osteitis, but dry socket still gets you to the page

Very painful. It is just as it says...dry socket.
I would rinse with a oral antiseptic and keep most cotton ovber the area where th tooth was pulled.

That happens if you suck on a straw after the tooth is pulled...I'm not sure what it is...but it definitely is not good...
