It's probably an instinct from the wild to cover up food the animal isn't going to consume immediately to hide it from scavengers.

The children acted naturally with no expectations of the cat and just let him be himself and they apparently had a ball with him. Your cat is not getting what he needs from you and your husband. Apparently the husband is gone all day and then hides away when he is home doing 'artistic' stuff. Not much time for the cat is there? How much 'quality' time do you spend with the cat on a regular basis? If you cannot give the cat what he seems to need; another cat would not be a bad idea. I personally, prefer two cats at a time. The spend a lot of time together and actually let me sleep at night because they are entertaining each other and not romping all over my bed keeping me awake. If you get another cat, get a spayed female.

My cat does the same thing...especially with her water bowl/something like tapping the water bowl-her depth perception is a little off. With her food she takes a little piece out and tries to cover it up. I guess some cats just do that. My mom's 2 cats do it, too.

Who knows with cats? They're all crazy :-) One of my cats scoops her food and water out of the dish to eat and drink off of her paw...

Actually, she could just be reinforcing her territory. Cats have scent glands in their paws and eyes, which is why you cat keeps rubbing its face against you, and one reason declawed cats will still "sharpen their claws" on your furniture.

Cat's often play with their food and do other wierd things such as splashing their water. They are (depending on why they are doing it at that particular time) either;
A - being silly
B - pretending to catch their food themselves
C - pretending to stop their food 'escaping', ie as though they caught a mouse etc.
D - trying to annoy you

You have to pay close attention to your cat's behaviour so you can tell why she is doing things at different times.

It means she's a cat. They do such weird things. I have an adult who paws in her water dish and now the new kitten has learned to do that from her.

to check whether the food is alive? haha!

first of all, does she EAT her food later on? if so, i dont think u need to change the food. if she resists eating the food, then u might need to look into a different brand.

next.. its possible that she's searching for stuff within the food. for some unknown reason!

My cat does this too though not so much anymore. Only one would do it and I could never figure any reason why.

My cat does the same thing. So does our dog. I think it's because they think if they don't hide it it won't be there when they come back.
