I live in Brazil where most do not have the opportunity of
studying in a college at a younger age, so when they
retire or earn some money they go to College or University
to obtain the knowledge they have always thought to be
an impossible dream. Therefore we have many in their
40‘s 50‘s 60‘s and 70‘s in college and doing very well
mixing in with the the young and it is a dream come
true. Usually they attend night class in order to continue
working. I have a son (42), who has two University degrees
and has entered the same University for a third degree
in Philosophy! I know this is a different country, but what I
am trying to get across is that it is never too late to learn,
whatever the subject. It will make you a better person whose
presence will enlighten all within your group and beyond.
Go for it and you may be helping someone in the future.
It could be your own children. I wish you all the best for trying
so hard - cheers, Iain Ritchie

I went back to college at 45. Part time and graduated at 48. No, you're not too old.

A proper job. Now that's interesting. And what exactly would that be? A job that is full time? If you're paying the bills and searching different jobs... that's fine in my world.

Don't use school as an excuse though. Your first job will have you underemployed. Although you're at the top of schooling, without experience, you'll be in a 'junior' position in the corporate world. Take the leap... get a starter job in your chosen field.. .and complete your schooling. Then, the job and your career will grow together.

peace

You're never too old to still be in college. But it sounds like you're going about it in a part-time way. What you need to do is go at it with all you've got. Study hard and stay at it. If you have time, get a part-time job while in school. My step-son is in the Coast Guard and works nights at a gas station. Says it's the easiest job ever. Something like that would be good for you. Not much action at night, so you can study while earning pocket money. Good luck, and get serious about school!

Are your college courses actually getting you anywhere or are you just studying for the sake of studying? A lot of people keep on going in education because they can't decide what to do next, or they don't want to face the 'real world' yet.
But if you have a job in mind and you think that there's a course or degree that will help prepare you for it then I think it's a great idea to keep studying.
21 is not old - I'm 27 and about to go back to uni.

Really it is not necessary to choose between work and education - why not consider the Open University?

That way you can be earning full-time and still working towards more qualifications.

I did my degree with them over 7 years whilst working full-time. I was then able to quit my job and go to a regular university to do an MA, and am now about to start a PhD.

I'm 33, so I don't think age is an issue. But you clearly need to make your mind up what you want in the long-term.

Your never too old, I was in college studying beauty therapy up until I had my baby on june there, im 22, and i had 2 women of 48 and 53 in my class, so dont listen to anyone else. you do what makes YOU happy, and you'v got the right idea. Why work in a supermarket stocking shelves for a crumby wage when you can stick in at college a wee while longer and make something of yourself earning a decent wage.

Good Luck

Never too old, the more life experience you have the more valuable you will be on your course and in your future career. My mum did her degree at 40 something, my aunt at 50 something, and they both really truly had a fab time, loved it, and got on well with the other students of all ages. If you're not sure about what you want to do contact companies who do things you might be interested in and ask to 'shadow' someone or do work experience or volunteer to do something in that line of work until you have made up your mind. Then go for it, be positive about yourself and your abilities and have a great time.
Good luck.

I went back to college at 21 to retake my A levels. It was a bit weird being in classes with ppl up to 5 years younger than me but there were some older ppl to. I was the oldest in my particular classes but there was a woman who was 25 in another A level class. I had a great time and got some decent grades. One of the best decisions I ever made I think.

I went to college when i was 21and trained to be a nurse because b4 then i had no idea what i wanted to do,in my class we had people of all ages ranging from 17 to age 50!Sometimes on leaving school your still unsure on what you want to do in life so its better to wait. Deciding on a career takes time and look at the life experience you have gained on working and things first...this stands you in good stead for bein succesful and sure of yourself and your chosen career! Take your time deciding...its a big desicion. Good luck!
