I can't really see why it should be a problem, when I had mine out, the sedation made me vomit for a couple of days, it didn't affect the sockets. The thing you need to be careful of is that you don't remove the bloodclots from the sockets as this can lead to an infection called dry socket, and it hurts like hell, so as long as yuo don't keep poking your tongue into the socket or rinse too vigourously, a small cough shouldn't be a problem, but ask the dentist, not the receptionist!

If your cough is a smoker's cough, there wouldn't be a problem from the cough, but smoking might pull the scab from the hole where the tooth used to be leaving a painful dry socket. If the cough is a symptom of something else, like strep or some other bacterial infection, there might be a problem with the healing process due to your immune system being too busy to deal with defending an open sore from a new infection.
I would ask the dentist him/herself about this.

I will say this...
I had my lowers pulled at one time. Absolutely miserable.
I had my uppers pulled a couple years later. I slept an hour after getting home, and then moved furniture. It was amazing how great I felt.
I would say go for it. You've blocked out the time, and you'll be so heavily-medicated that a slight cough probably won't matter a bit.
You should definitely tell the dentist tomorrow when you go in.
Good luck!

Ask your pharmacist to recommend a cough syrup if it is bothering you so much but there is hardly any reason to reschedule

Reschedule - it sounds like it could be quite painful with that cough.

Basically they are worried that you are sick. If you are your immune system will not work to heal you gums as quickly and could lead to infection.
