Truthfully, that is probably the best way. I would try coating the pill in some butter, several people I know have had good luck with it. Also, instead of shoving it down his throat, try opening his mouth, and placing it in the very back of his tongue. Then close his mouth immediately and blow air into his face (mostly his nose). You can also gently massage his throat/neck for a few moments. Both these methods will cause him to swallow the pill without trouble.

instead of a hot dog..try another treat or maybe wrap it in some cheese. Our dog needed to take medication, so we would just get out some lunch meat and cheese..and make a little roll up with it in the center...he loved it and never knew the pill was there......peanut butter is good also if your dog will just swallow it like on some bread. But if he wants to lick it...then of course he will find the pill. Good Luck.

At the dog sanctuary I work ,with 60-70 dogs housed, meds are a big deal daily. We use the canned squeeze cheese. With your dog I would coat the med in the squeeze cheese, and have 2 pieces of hot dog that the dog knows is there. Give the coated med and immediately hand over the pieces of hot dog. He/she will be so interested in his next bite of food that the med won't be noticed. Good Luck! :)

Not really. I have seen dogs that take their medicine with no problem. Others will fight tooth and toenails....litterly. You might try putting it in something other than a piece of wiener. If a dog chews it up he will detect the medicine. You might grind the pill up, mix it with water and use a serine to insert it way down between his/her teeth and jaw......than hold the mouth shut til they swallow it. Still, try other things to put the pill in. Remember, IF the pill is dry, it will hang up in their throat, just like pills do in ours. Has to be wet. Good Luck. Pops

That is the best way
Stand over him one leg on each side facing the same direction and make him sit. Lift his head up towards you and open his mouth and stick it as far back on the tongue as possible. Close his jaw rub his throat till he swallows and give him a big kiss on his snout.
I have one that will beg for his benadryl he loves the kiss. Makes it all better.

you can by things at the petstore called Pill Pockets. you put the pill inside and wrap it around the pill so the dogs think its a treat. i have not personally tried them because my dogs are smart, like yours and will eat the meat and spit out the pill. you can also try wrapping it in bread or cheese.

You could try to get a really small ball gun. Try the feed and grain store or someplace like Petco.
Oh! It's not a gun like you are shooting someone! It's a device for administering a pill to an animal.

I hold my dogs mouth open by the snout and drop the pill in the back. I keep the mouth open and head back by holding the top of her muzzle and this causes her to keep swallowing.
