I don't think we would know why until we die and then we still may not know why.
Sounds like a question for Dali Lama.
our lifeforce has to go somewhere but that doesn't mean it's with the consciousness that being human experiences.

Yes. And I'll try...
1. As a Christian, I believe in resurrection (as opposed to reincarnation, extinction, an existence submerged within some group/god mind or even a disembodied life in a spiritual realm called heaven -- not completely orthodox, I know, but that's where I am right now in my attempt at comphrehension)
The apostle John wrote: "Dear friends, now we are the children of God, but it is not yet clear what we will be when Christ returns. We know this, however, that we will be like Him, because we will see Him as He is." I John 3:2 paraphrased
The apostle Paul wrote about this subject repeatedly --
"Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first of those who have fallen asleep [a 1st century euphemism, like 'passed away'] ...Listen, I tell you a mystery: we [believers] will not all sleep, but we WILL all be changed -- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet WILL sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed" I Corinthians 15:20, 51-52
"Brothers, we do not want you to be ignorant about those who have fallen asleep, or to grieve like others who have no hope. We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have died [trusting] in Him. According to the Lord Jesus' own words, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have died. For the Lord will come down from heaven with a loud shout, with the voice of the archangel and the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are still alive will be caught up together with them. And we will be with the Lord forever." I Thessalonians 4:13-17
(Jesus to the thief on the cross) "I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise." Luke 23:43
And finally, belivers in Christ will have jobs after the resurrection --
"Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death [judgment and damnation] has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and will reign with Him for a thousand years." Revelations 20:6
From these representative passages I conclude several things --
1. That there is some kind of enhanced body, the same type of body possessed by Christ after his resurrection. that will be given to all who believe in Him when He returns. This body is distinct from the resurrection body of Christ and those of other believers. With the senses of this body we will see and recognize Christ. Recognition is an act of mind, and implies that the object (the one seen) is distinct from the subject (the one seeing).
The existence of the distinct individual is also implied by Paul's use of the word 'with' in conjunction with the resurrection. We are 'with' the Lord forever, not part of Him in the sense that our individual identity is lost.
2. That body will house the mind and personality belonging to the believer. Otherwise we could not participate in the Kingdom.
3. Jesus' use of the immediate term 'today' indicates to me that there is no separating the mind/ego/self from the body (this is the ancient Jewish concept: 'soul' refers to the entire person, spirit and body). There is no intermediary, disembondied state between death and resurrection because time is a concept relevant only to things with corporeal existence. If the spirit could be separated from the body (a pagan concept), it would have no awareness of time. It's next moment of awareness comes, from our point of view, with its association with the perfect, imperishable resurrection body.
4. I assume from the verses that follow in Revelations chapter 20 that the unbelieving dead are also given some similar resurrection body when they are raised after the thousand years and before the final judgment. Personal pronouns are used throughout, indicating that each individual is distinct.

No way. Rememberance of the life left would very hard pressed to remember unless one lived a conscious life, thus having a conscious death.
Until that happens, one is absorbed into all that is of the source, until there is some type of reassignment into another life form, and not necesserily on planet earth.

Part of it. Tibetan Buddhism tells us that exposure to luminosity, or truth, between lives, erases our memory, but our reaction to the luminosity is the result of the old ego, and it carries some of the emotions of that ego into the next.

The soul is mind, will, and emotions. The soul survives. Jesus told about the rich man and Lazarus.... The rich man recognized Lazarus, so we know that we can recognize people. The rich man also wanted his brothers to be warned ... meaning we have memory.
